View original topic: Rattling noise when starting

Hey guys,
I own a 1966 or 67 VW rail buggy with the 1700 pancake engine on it. It has a swing axle transmission also.

I recently noticed the outer axle tube seals were leaking gear oil, so I ordered the parts and replaced the seals. My experience with air cooled VW products is very limited, but I am a retired automotive technician with 35 years of dealership work, and I didn't have much trouble replacing the seals. The kit came with two gaskets, two thin shims each of different sizes, the seal and O-Rings. While removing the driver's side plate the seal is in, the axle pulled out a bit, but it pushed right back in with ease, and everything seemed to line up correctly.

Today, I started the engine, and it had a light rattling noise coming from it. The engine has never given me any trouble, and I don't know enough about these swing axle transmissions to know if the noise could be from the axle coming out a bit. Also, I only used one of the gaskets per side, from the kit. I have no idea why the kit had two in it. My question is, could my noise be coming from something misaligned due to the axle pulling out? I did let the engine run long enough to diagnose it correctly, but I wanted to ask about this transmission before I did anything else. Thanks for any help.
