I just saw this item I thought I would share.

Do a search for Manx and they seem to have rather large selection of parts for a generic VW vendor.

Edit: Select the "Manx and Fiberglass Kit Cars" tab on the main page.

Thanks for the heads up but I wouldn't want to loose either my gas guage or a gallon or so's gas capacity.

Yes, thanks for posting, looks like a great idea But the price is a bit high at $100 plus a new cap. It does say it includes a adapter flange to relocate the gauge sending unit.

Does anyone know of a nice looking flip cap that will fit the stock filler neck after it has been cut down a few inches? I did buy a bus filler neck body gasket to hide the big hacked out hole in my hood.

Something like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/BSA-AJS-Norton-Cafe-Racer-...mp;vxp=mtr

Cool idea...but you still have to figure out how to tighten up hose clamps from the underside of the hood.

Still the best way to do this IMHO is to use a section of 2.50" DOM .120 wall tubing and have it threaded to 16 threads per inch. Weld to the fuel tank and order this flip fuel cap. Just unscrew the cap and install your hood. Then install a large grommet from a 55 Chevy truck and screw the cap back on.

That looks like what I want to do. I see the ad for the cap indicates in can be glued on. Not sure I would trust that.

I used the 2" flip cap on my Lithia Mark III. Works perfect and never has leaked. I would not trust glue to last. I am going to use the 2.50" cap on my Manx II project to cover the existing hole from the PO.

So I started cleaning up my ancient tank last night, big hole on the bottom and I can see smaller holes when I hold it up to the light. It is pretty nasty inside but I had planned to give it a complete treatment along with a motorcycle tank and a Model T tank.

So now I need to decide, repair and restore this tank and cut down the filler neck? Buy a new tank like this one?

That one is 12.5 gallons and has the short filler neck for under hood filling. It looks like it would be easy to modify for a Monza style cap.

Or go with a poly tank that has a sending unit mount. It's all about time and money. Being stuck on the side of the road because the tank let some crud loose is never fun.

That tank will be MUCH too tall to fit under any buggy hood.

You'd be best modifying a regular VW tank.

Ah, good point, didn't think of that.

Anyone have experience mounting a poly tank under the hood? I think a 10x36" tank might be too big but so far that is the only one I have found with fuel sender mount.

Get early 61-67(?) tank and move filler neck to top edge and be sure outlet is at very bottom for max useage.... I know seems sacrilege to cut up new tank, but in the end, you will be a lot happier then trying to adapt something that will never be quite right or satisfying .... There are certain things in life that require starting with new and improving on it, fuel tanks is one of those things.... If you put garbage tank in it will come back to haunt you soon after you button up hood and think you are merrily on your way....

Much easier and a whole lot safer than trying to modify/weld an old tank though.

My favorite thing to cut up. Easy to weld, safe, easy to clean and seal.

Do any of the various years of reproduction tanks offer a benefit in a dune buggy? The 61-67 tank appears to be the best choice if I use the current hole in the hood, just shorten and adapt the filler neck for the cap I pick. But before I order, I wanted to see if the Super Beetle or 68-77 tanks had an advantage. I'm using the stock fuel line in my '63 pan. I have some clearance with the hood but not a lot.

Ugh, $42 S&H on a 61-67 tank.

About only thing later tanks offer is filler neck is on upper passenger side and uses hose connections and clamps... Still may not be of any practical use....

I was tempted to get a fuel cell made up for my Imp. Turned out to be very pricey to get one made up. Got a new tank 70s model then removed the filler from my old worn out tank along with the sender mount. Had the filler from new tank removed and welded old filler neck in the center of the tank where the original sender was located. The old sender mount flange was welded up on the flat surface near the original filler. Saved myself about $200.00.

Mounting the tank in the original whole EMPI provided was cheating me of gas volume so about 1/2 inch of trimming around the fiberglass and setting up a firm mount for it is all that's left to do. I'll post pics if you need em tomorrow.
