I would have thought enclosed transport would have been a wise investment, especially considering the fact that there was a pile of loose parts inside. That would have kept it from being exposed in bare metal too.

Where is this bus at now? What is being re-done?

Okay so time to update the thread.

cutting out individually all of the previous shops plug welds.

Jason vw Sun Nov 30, 2014 11:33 am

setting in the new separation panel

Jason vw Sun Nov 30, 2014 11:44 am

installing the rear most (deluxe) pillars above the wheel tubs.

early compared to late

Jason vw Sun Nov 30, 2014 11:48 am

finalizing the long side reinforcements

more drivers b pillar detail. note using door seals to set proper placement of pillar.

Jason vw Sun Nov 30, 2014 11:59 am

details of the klassic fab panel being used to replace the outer b pillar and semaphore hole.

Jason vw Sun Nov 30, 2014 12:12 pm

we had to replace the passenger wheel tub due to this

Jason vw Sun Nov 30, 2014 12:47 pm

when we removed the short side panel we found this.

and that wouldnt stand so we put and entire pass c pillar in

Jason vw Sun Nov 30, 2014 1:04 pm

getting rear corner mocked up

took corner off and short side panel and joined then together as one piece before attaching permanently to the body

door gaps look pretty good on finished product

Jason vw Sun Nov 30, 2014 1:13 pm

after the short side panel was on and the new lower c pillar was attached the door didnt close properly. the cargo door rocker had been installed too high and had to be removed. the previous shop probably never checked this prior to making the lower rockers a solid unit

a special guest stopped by to help work on the bd23 during bulli brigade weekend

this is hopefully the last piece of metal the the previous shop installed that we will have to remove

Jason vw Sun Nov 30, 2014 1:48 pm

rear corner repair and prep. using the frame machine to draw the metal as tight as possible

Wow. Sometimes I feel bad about my welding, but after seeing that-I'm really not that bad. Thanks for boosting my confidence level!

BTW great job.

I just stumbled onto this thread, as I'm a type 3/34 guy. Just wanted to say wow. Nice to see a car getting the touch of a craftsman who does it right.
