While cleaning the interior of my new 77 westfalia i looked in the closet and in the bottom of the spare tire well was a hole (which is right open to the engine compartment). Is this supposed to be there or should i plug it up?

Hey man,

Yeah, it's supposed to be there. There should be a little rubber plug to close it up. In any standard bus, the spare tire was in that spot, so I guess they felt it necessary to have a drain plug there. On a side note, that hole came in handy for me this summer on my two week road trip. I was never camping at RV camps with hookups, since I like state parks better and they are cheaper too. But having no power source for my laptop and cell phone meant being creative. I bought a power inverter from circuit city and passed the wires through that hole in the linen closet. Since the aux battery is right under that hole, sinply clamp the alligator clips to the batt. posts, and inside the bus attatch the inverter. And if your westy is a Deluxe, you can simply use the battery tester on the fridge control panel to monitor the condition of the battery so you don't run it down. Neat way to be totally self sufficient on the road.
I remember discovering things while thoroughly checking out my westy for the first time. Fun, isn't it? :D
