I had the red alternator light come on in my 89 westy yesterday, the light on the instrument cluster. I read thru some other threads and did some troubleshooting. Its not the blue wire or any other wire that is loose or corroded on the alternator itself, i checked and cleaned all the contacts.
The light does not change in intensity/flicker, and does not change with RPMs. The belt is fine, there is no slipping and everything is turning ok.
Is there anything else I can check before removing and taking the alternator to get it bench checked at the autoparts store?
Thanks,

You can test the voltage at the alternator. It should be at 14v. |

If you're checking the voltage right after start-up -- blip the throttle to higher RPMs briefly before testing, else it will read low. |

Ok I will test he voltage at the alternator. Im assuming I test right at the main terminal on the alternator where the wires that run to the battery connect?
Thanks. |

Yes the big red wire on the back of the Alt is where you want to check. If you are in need of a new one, it is a great time to upgrade the bracket and wiring harness. I just went through the process.
