View original topic: Another Sluggish Van Story

When my engine is cold, it runs fine, but recently once the van warms up it gets a little bit of a buck, hesitation, and sluggish feel with the engine.. It makes “get me home power” but I would want to make any trips with it until fixed…

Here is what has been done so far…

> O2 sensor has been replaced…. Once this was done last week and she ran like top for about 150 miles, and seems to run a little better when I unplug the new sensor… can these things go bad that fast?

> Changed out the catalytic converter, this didn’t solve the problem… Had it sitting here since I bought the van waiting for the next smog inspection to install it… figured now would be a good time…

> Changed out the Temp II switch this past summer when I redid the cooling system… can these too go bad that fast? If that did go bad would this be causing a running rich situation?

> Cycled all the plugs that is unplugged and re-plugged them… check the connections – all shinny

> Vacuum lines all good and clear, except the pink one as I have no way to check that…

> AFM – I have one of the patch cords for the ‘highway hiccup” problem… ran with this on and off…. Didn’t solve the problem…

> FPR valve… new last year when I redid the fuel lines….

> Fuel filter was replaced this past summer and has about 1500 miles on it…

> Checked the fuel pump, not making any noise, and I am off to get a fuel pressure tester to see where we are there….

So if the fuel pressure test comes back good, what else should I be looking at?

Thanks

Examining the plugs might tell you if the problem is confined to one cylinder.

While they're out - good time to do a compression check.

While the ignition wires are removed you could check to be sure they are all good.

One problem that can arise after things warm up in there is a failing coil. Hard to test for a partial/intermittent coil failure, but I always have a spare known-good coil so it is quick to swap it on and see if things improve. No need to mount it permanently or to remove the current coil -- just strap/bungee it in place and move the wires over.

Forgot to mention, all new plugs, wires, cap, and rotor... and the coil was new last year.... I am hoping these things don't fail that fast....

I'll pull the plugs over the weekend along with the injectors
