yesterday I was checking the transporter guide by David Eccles.
It talks about a number of prototypes given being built, and also talks about exact dates with specific information about changes in the plans of the pre production prototypes.

It also talks about a first and second generation of prototypes (that second generation, having horizontal engine vents and inner fuel filler).

Anybody knows what are that 'second generation' of prototypes? Maybe that prototypes has higher front hinges and other later features closer to the final production models...

just a thougt, I don't have the book in front of me... ;)

My guess would be that there is a long way between the 10 hand built prototypes and the Die pressed assembly line product. Once that line was built, assembly production tests would be made, quality issues addressed and pre chassis number vehicles road tested to check for issues.

Just a guess too but I always regarded the "prototype" at the VW museum to be from that batch of vehicles possibly.

yes, indeed, but i gues a very early one, because of the screwed front emblem and that recess used in the windows.

first generetion, was the one with the beetle chassis, the second one was the typ29 we discus here about.

i also found this drawing

they wrote on 12th of Nov, four Prototypes where be shown for the press.
Two weeks befor the presentation, the busses wasn´t even painted.
They build the four busses in a very short time..

Hi!

Yesterday i met a guy from an oldtimer club here in Austria.
He told me about a rumor or - lets say a dicussion - about a picture from 1949. As i was told the photo can be found in several books and shows up every few years somewhere.

The story:
Richard Strauss was a german componist. He died in 1949 in Garmisch Partenkirchen. And not long before he died someone took a picture of him. Or at least it shows the village where he lived at the end. I can't remember. But in the background you can see the front of a vehicle. A vehicle that looks like a VW Bus - and now the guy from yesterday told me that this is an neverending discussion. Here's why:

Some say it is a Prototype of a Type 2 Volkswagen Bus.
Others say the picture has been taken in 1950.
Then there are people who think that it just shows a car that looks quite similar.
Or is it some kind of time travel? :-k :D

Did anyone of you ever hear about this story? Or did anyone every see that photo? Don't want to hurt any copyrights of a publishing company, but i am quite interested in seeing this picture now!
