Will the air filter from a '73 fit on the carbs of a '72?
You can put 72 carbs on a 73 engine, but you will need all the 72 only components if you use the 72 short bases.
If you use 72 carbs and 73-74 bases for the carbs you could use the 73 air cleaner and other parts possibly. But if you have the short bases, you will need the 72 only air cleaner.
Others can probably more specific than me though on part interchangeably |

Okay I see, so basically just take the entire setup from a '72 and it'll bolt on, but mixing will be tricky
Thanks! |

| The manifolds and air cleaner system don't interchange separately, but the carbs themselves do. The return springs are slightly different but can be adapted. |

Here’s a good link of Carb info and parts https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=699204
Today I went to the junkyard and found a 72 dual carburetor air cleaner, balance tube, linkage. They are a bit rough but I’m thrilled I found them.
Then I found a 73-74 system but managed to get 3 carbs for the left hand side

The joy of crusty treasures...No more bus boneyards where I live but I remember those days.
Send your carbs to Tim at Volkzbitz.

Also don't forget that the throttle cable routing for '72 is different than for '73-'74. The cable is farther left of centre on a '72. The front-most engine cover plate - the one right beneath the fuel tank cover - has a collar attached to it for the cable guide tube, and the long linkage arm between the carbs is different, as well '72 has a special coil bracket with the throttle return spring attachment. |
