Hi all I'm almost finished my 2054cc engine build for my beetle but I have a question. At the moment I have a solid non vented engine lid now I know this will be no good for this size engine but should I just fit top standoffs to my non vented engine lid or buy a vented lid and not use standoffs? Go for a late model decklid with 4 rows.

I personally hate the look of standoffs.

I think stand-offs are perfect on a full 80's cal-look bug.

I agree. The standoff just looks tacky. Go vented.

And yes - this is my first post. Owner of a 73 SB in dire need of resto, and my resolution for 2015 is to do just that. This is an awesome site.

my old 73 (had from 88 to 99) was a mild cal look and my new 73 (bought in 2012) is also a mild cal look. on my old one, i had the 4 vent lid but during the summer i would run stand offs and take them out during winter

Ok so a non vented lid is not going to work so I need to buy a 4 vent lid and standoffs if the weather get hot. By the way that never happen ls here in the UK :-)

Advinnie, if you lived in the California Valley, South Texas, Arizona or New Mexico, I'd get the 26 louvered lid--pluss stand-offs (for the hot summers). But you live in Britain. Summertime there is not 100 degrees + during the summer, for weeks on end.

I'd just get the louvered lid.

Stand-Off look UGLY (BFU)

You can also cut a big hole in the decklid behind the license plate and use a 1" space to allow more air to enter the engine compartment.

Advinnie,

It's not just the ambient temperature (although a hot climate like here in Adelaide Australia does not help).

The real problem is that the doghouse fan pushes more air through the engine than the early fans, and the inlet area of the under-window slots is just not enough to pull all that air into the fan.

The 1500/1600sp engine (68-70) blows 21 cf/sec, and the doghouse fan (71 up) blows 25cf/sec (over 43,000 litres per minute!) at around 4000 engoine rpm.

So without the slotted engine lid, the fan just runs short of cooling air, usually above about 50mph (70mph limit on your motorways, right?). And of course the faster you go the more heat the engine is producing, so it gets worse the faster you go.

I've been there - done that, and I had just s stock 1600 twin port engine in my 68. Huge overheating problem every time I drove it more than 50mph. Fitted a slotted engine lid, and the problem has never returned. Standoffs are not necessary if you have a slotted engine lid.

It's New Years day here and 37c - going to be 42c tomorrow. I think I'll stay indoors with the air conditioner running!

Cheers mate I do total understand what your saying but with a 2054cc engine there will be more heat being produced by the engine and the twin dual choke carbs will be sucking more air than stock carb the cooling fan will still be sucking the same amount as normal so with this higher demand for air will the vented lid be ok.
And we to are expecting a higher than normal temperature today we should see 10 degrees Celsius so I think I will stay in today with the heating on :-)

Even with that displacement, vented would do fine.

Well, whatever you choose last thing you want is the rain pouring down the carb throats... or allowing easy access to leaves into your engine bay, then into the fan then down to sit between the head cooling fins...
