Hello all,

I've been restoring/customizing my '66 21-window for over 10 years. I've put a lot of money into it and I'd like to insure it so I'm not at a total loss if anything happens. I applied for insurance through Hagerty and Grundy this weekend, but got denied from both.

Their reasoning was understandable: I had a speeding ticket in November 2012, and two at-fault accidents in my Syncro last year. The Syncro accidents were minor, but I did insurance claims for both of them through my current provider (USAA). The first was last October, insurance paid $1500. The second was in December and insurance paid $2500. Small amounts, but apparently enough to make me a bad insurance candidate.

I talked to the guy at Hagerty today and he said I'd have to wait until 11/2015 to apply again. That's when my driving record would likely be good enough.

I was hoping to drive it this summer, but it seems like the only way I could do that would be with mediocre insurance that covers the blue book value.

Any advice?

Thanks,

Matt

Would hagerty cover the vehicle if it was in your wife's name but you were driving? Just curious.

Good question. I thought this might be a possibility too, but they said it covers the whole household. Now if my wife had a different address, hmmmm, that might work. Probably don't want to do something shady to get the insurance though.

I'm actually OK with not driving it that much until November. I'd be happy to just have it in the garage and drive it to shows 1-2 times per month.

However, I would like to drive it to Montana (from Denver) this summer. I've always dreamed of driving it in the parade in the town I grew up in. Is it possible to get trip insurance that covers it for a 10-day, 2000 mile trip?

Most auto insurance companies offer collector car insurance. The policies might not be as ideal as companies like hagerty who specialize in collector cars, but they are offered. For example, I have http://www.anpac.com/ and they have a "Chrome" collector policy available for their customers if you have your daily driver insured with them.

It may be worthwhile to leave USAA if they don't have a collector product line.

USAA doesn't do collector car insurance, I think they tried to transfer me to Progressive for that. I ended up going with a very small company in PA called JC Taylor where they offered an agreed value.

My AAA has it.
