I disagree, I've had a want ad for a running type 3 engine for over a year and not one hit. Paperweights, I have three.
So, you want to buy a $1000 complete running engine cheaper/easier/faster than you could rebuild one from your 3 paperweights. 1 year on that startegy hasn't worked.

YUP!
The type 34 is just sitting Idle, heck I even had time to drive MY dream car (my squareback)! so YES! I will wait another year.
Man, I think Mike is right on this one. Take one of your long block paperweights and have it rebuilt, Martin. Stop waiting and start driving! At least you'll know what's in it! |

If I wanted to drive, I have my square, the type 34 I may just flip.   That's why I am looking for a runner. For the long run, yes, I will build an almost perfect looking and running engine, as stated earlier. But for this project, NOPE! a transplant it will be. I know, it's been almost a year, but life always gets in the way. Mike Fisher, I promise you I will bring the ad down when I find my decent running type 3 engine, otherwise it will still be here.

What's up with the paperweights? Why not get one of those running? Save yourself a grand or close to it? |

I don't know, that's why I am looking for an engine. mechanic's prices around me are crazy high and I don't have the time or know how. I can totally install a running engine and adjust it to my needs, but taking motor apart, HELL NO! |

It's not so bad. If a German high school dropout can put it together, surely you can take it apart! :D |

if you have a couple complete typ three engines then no it would not be hard to put together a running one and just stick it in there most people who want to get their type threes on the road just want an engine that they can throw in and will at least run for a little bit to give them the initiative to put more money into it and make it better
most engines that you see that are complete or at least complete enough that you can piece them together usually run eight hundred to a thousand dollars Or More and are usually either on the west coast or in the Northwest someplace its going to cost you at least six to seven hundred dollars to have it shipped I was going to have a type 4 engine And an automatic transmission shipped from Tennessee to New Orleans and it was going to cost me 650 dollars
now I did get lucky and the fact that the guy knows somebody in Gulfport but it's still going to cost me 1300 dollars total to buy it and go get it that's cheaper than any type 3 motor that I found shipped to me and its cheaper than having one rebuilt especially in area like mine because there aren't many engine builders in this area
it would cost me about as much to find the kind of Subaru engine and exhaust and everything I need but then you do have to add on the price of the stand-alone computer
and the time and knowledge it will take you to install it properly |

| I know this will sound bad initially, but I was able to keep my fasty alive for three years on used parts I had laying around, bummer of being a student With no job. Rebuilding one is very simple if you have the patience and a little bit of space. |

I ran a converted T-1 engine (with t-3 cooling tins and pieces) for 6 years in my Notch. prior to that, I had that engine in my old 70 Square, along with 2 years in my wife's Fastback. Best 300 investment I ever did. You could always look for a good t-1 engine, and then convert it.
With any luck, you might even be able to find a GEX engine. We know the split bus guys are always on the hunt for 1 of those, so you might have to pay extra for 1 of those. I mean, you're just looking at making it a runner, so you can flip it anyway. |

Is that a manual tranny car? Did you have to fab a rear engine mount to hang that motor? Thank man! |

| Look for little buggy. He has a whole post on putting a subbie in your square. Yes a modified rear hanger is required. Yes it can fit under the floor. Rad goes up front where your spare was. |

Yes this is a 4 speed car. I used the Legacy engine mounts and cross member bolted to a custom cross member mount. It bolts where the original engine hanger mounted and to the frame by the shock towers.

You know the engine needs water to cool , right ?! Why all that trouble ??
We at least did put big T4 or 911 engines in Bugs back in the 90's with everything else you need to make the bug slow down / stop also. That is at least a good engine and it does not need water!! Plenty of power , long lasting and good for cruising at 120 mph + :D  Just good ol times |

| Lol. yeah It took a bit but after 2 years I figured out it needed coolant to cool. Completely joking here. Yes I could have done a T4 or 911 engine and it would have still been old school air cooled, but back then they were cheap. you could built a 1776cc for around $800, now days here in the Denver are that engine is almost $2k, a stock 1600 rebuild will still set you back $1800. A type 4 engine might be around 90hp, more if you build it but of course then the price goes up. Long lasting, like 300k miles long lasting? No maybe 100k if your lucky. I was able to get 140hp, reliable power with zero maintenance (no more adjusting carbs and valves), air conditioning, tons of torque, no issues with cooling in slow low RPM traffic. If we were back 10 years ago where air cools were cheap to build then I probably would have left it, but I could do 2 Subaru swaps for less than 1 air cooled engine with even close to these advantages. I can't say i would ever own another VW with an air cooled engine after driving this one. Nothing wrong with them for others, I just like to drive my VW not work on it. |

I would do some very good research first before you spend all that time and money in a subaru engine transplant. Just a note : the older your engine the longer it will last. Good luck with it and I hope you will get decent miles out of it before you have to repair it. Do not forget : what you do not have - can not break!
A good quality built T3 VW aircooled engine will last at least as long as a subaru engine. Sure you will not have 140hp, but you will have lots of torque and not have to worry about many things. Good for 75 / 80mp/h, that is all you need anyways. Adjusting valves every couple thousands of miles does not kill me, because that is all I have to do.
Good T4 engines were never cheap to built. Even back in the 90's we did spend up to 10k US $ just for the T4 engine / long block alone. Everything was made in germany by known big manufacture which also supplied the big car companies. Next to no trouble with supplied parts back than. Cheap crappy parts did not exist.
911 engines and Porsche 911 were only cheap in the US, but never cheap in Europe. By the time you had a 911 engine + trans + your brakes updated for the power and made it street legal we are talking 15k - 20k  which was a lot of money back than!
