So I installed a new voltage regulator and my car tried to start once and then died. Upon any following attempt to start it nothing happened not even a click. I went poking with my test light and my ignition has power when the key is in the off position and trying to jump across the starter does nothing. Any ideas?

maybe a short to power. Trace all your wires best you can and make sure there's no damage or wires crossing. Sometimes the wire that goes to the solenoid(spade connector)likes to slide off resulting in no start. But that doesn't explain why you'd have power comingfrom the ignition wire with the key off. Something has got to be shorted either through a wire or internally in a component. Jiggle the key switch. They get sloppy with all the dirt that gets in them. Maybe you have an intermittant failure there.

Charge your battery first

I assumed he'd put the battery on a charger while he repaired a bad alt.
