I would love to get access to a dyno for a couple runs. I could care less about what the numbers are, what I want to see is the shape of the power and torque curve mainly to see how well the engine combination as a whole is working. Look for flat spots, dips and the relationship between the peak torque and peak power. Also where on the rpm scale those peaks are.

Oprn - this is the shop I used.

You'll probably change your mind once you find out what it costs just for one pull let alone for enough pulls to do any tuning.

It's usually $100.00 U.S. just for hookup then per pull or per hour.......

My experience (many cars not acvw only) shows that dyno loses depend on many factors -even little things thing like tyre pressure, wheel alignment, and how car is hooked matter. My bug tested on dyno shown, 14% losses, but with every pull these went down bit by bit, anding at 12% - according to operator this was due to transmission oil, bearings and every other part getting nice and hot.

Watch your tyres condition, age and speed rating - it is not unknown for tyres to explode on dyno, because You can easily exceed their speed limits while on a rolles

Back in 2016 when I tested my bus, it cost me $100 US. That was for the hook up and for 3 pulls.

That's 2016......My pulls were in 2017 and Mario would rent the dyno. My buggy's time was shared with another vehicle so the cost was split.
The dyno owner would still charge a fee for the hookup then let Mario run it.

I'm guessing 2024 dollars it will cost at least 50% more than what it did 7-8 years ago.

$120 / hour here

Vanapplebomb Mon Feb 19, 2024 2:51 pm

Man, that’s actually not as expensive as it would have thought. Cool.

Is the rpm limit during a pull controlled by the driver in the seat or the dyno operator? How is max rpm chosen? When Hp drops off?

15 Years ago, The BK Cruisers club of Georgia put on a dyno day. The lead up to the event online turned into a very good natured Pissing match among a few of the participants.
The Event turned out to be one of the Best VW gatherings I’ve been to. Everyone had a Great time.
I think the chassis dyno is the way to go, since there’s very little downtime between runs.
Here’s a couple Videos:

and just to be clear, the Dyno runs are on my dime. but its not a test and tune day, just something to see how your ride does.

Hmmm, 26 hour drive. Maybe not this time!

BFB Tue Sep 16, 2025 6:04 am

you could make it by merely driving just one hour a day

Wish I had my latest engine together and sorted, they are 16 minutes from me.
My brother-in-law who still races v8's told me about them, but I didn't figure they would be able to hook to a VW.
I assume then that they will be able to do 4 lug VW in the future?
Is $120 their normal fee or is that a special amount?
Are spectators welcome?
Do you know if Pearson will be there with his turbo VW?

Curious, did it take a year to get a slot? I have had a hard time getting a place with a dyno jet to have availability. Any and all lug patterns work I assume? I think I have the day off.

My brother-in-law who still races v8's told me about them, but I didn't figure they would be able to hook to a VW. I asked Clayton if he'd be able to dial the machine back enough for a vw considering some of the things they've ran there. heh heh!
I assume then that they will be able to do 4 lug VW in the future? I would assume too? they are getting the vw adapters just because were doing this, so I assume they'll still have them afterwards.
Is $120 their normal fee or is that a special amount? he told me last year that was their normal fee, I don't know if things have gone up or not?
Are spectators welcome? yeh, why not!?
Do you know if Pearson will be there with his turbo VW? im really glad you asked, I need to holler at him. thanks!

no didn't that long to get, I just didn't have shit ready in time last year before it got cold and since a lot of the guys I know are in Buggys that's kind of a make or break thing.
and he's getting adapters for wide 5 and 4 on 130 lug patterns.
come on!

94touring Tue Sep 16, 2025 6:00 pm

5x112 bus pattern then?

94touring wrote: 5x112 bus pattern then?
no, 5x205
I hadn't planned on any busses I guess... but I can holler at him and see if he can get the 5x112 if you're definitely going to come?
let me know asap as he has to order them in
