Do I need to run a wire from the alternator d+ to a light, than to the ign switch. And if the bulb burns out alternator will not charge? I'm running a volt gauge. Do I need to do this or can I unhook the wire on the alternator and use the gauge?
If I need this light any other ideas my ign switch is very hard to get to. what should the normal volt reading be on the gauge? Thanks

Yes you need to wire a light in series for the alternator to charge. You could run a wire from your fusebox to the light to the alternator.

There's a wire on the alternator now that was run up to the light in the speedo. I was advised not to use that idiot light. Would that be on the correct terminal at the alternator? I could use that wire. Does that wire need to be by its self or can I connect to one other gauge? . the wire would go from alternator to bulb. the other bulb terminal would go to the other source no ground. I have everything completed trying to find an easily hook up.thank you

The wire to the D+ terminal is the exciter wire for the alternator. Do not hook anything else to that wire. A key on power source run through 1 bulb is all that should be on that circuit. You can use the factory idiot light but in an open buggy they are very hard to see. I use big indicator lights for both oil and alternator so they have a better chance of being seen. You can run your voltage gauge off the B+ terminal of the alternator or directly off the battery.

I understand. Was hoping for a easy way. If I get the ign switch out which connection does the wire go on. I have an after market so the terimals aren't marked as 30 etc. So this light should be on when car is running correct?

You want the light to have power when the ignition switch is in the ON position. Think of the D+ terminal as your "ground". The light should be on when the ignition switch is in the ON position and the engine is NOT running. Once the engine starts, the light should go out. You might need to blip the throttle to get the light to go out right after starting the engine.
