I am seeking advise on upgrading the gear shift in my 77 Bay. What would you suggest for more precise shifting compared to "hide and seek".
All bushings and the coupler have been replaced and the plate adjusted, so this is as good as it gets as stock.
I have considered the "EMPI Quick Shift" and a firmer urethane coupler. Are they any good?
How about the EMPI/Hurst shifter?
Other ideas?

| Quick shift will help the travel of the shifter but will do nothing for precision. I have one and it was worth the $7 but that's about it. |

hide and seek is either you or the whole shift mechanism needs going thru. There are wear issues both in the parts that hold the rod, the shift couplers and screws, the stop plate, the nose cone, and main bearing. Until you address all those issues no shifter will function well.

Oh, the whole things have been gone through, and I know from many years of aircooled VW driving that this is as good as it gets. My wife and myself are used to it and have no problems. Our grown up kids, however, are spoiled by modern manual and automatic and just can't get used to it.
I am just trying to improve it.

| The EMPI/pseudo Hurst shifters have an issue with the reverse lock out spring failng. I have a "temporary" one (been using it for a couple of years) with that issue. Each time I search for 2nd gear I have to avoid accidently finding reverse. I have had a Berg shifter in a box in the garage for a while that may finally be installed in a few weeks. (See you in a week or two Gary!) |

I have one of these on my RHD '78 DC, and it does nothing for me, really. It was installed by some PO. Meh.
Now left-handed shifting -- that's the fun part! This is the only RHD vehicle I have owned, so maybe, since I am using my left hand to shift, I have nothing to compare it to. |
