Hi, I am looking for a vacum can for a 78 bay window with fuel injection. The vacume can has burst and I am not seeing any of this number for sale. What else can I use? Can I use a 009 with fuel injection? The number on the can lever is 581 distributor is 022 905 205 S

Thanks

You should try to avoid using the 009 with fuel injection. You need to keep that system as built, with all the right parts. That said, I did use an aftermarket electronic module SVDA distributor on my 1977 fuel injected bus. It worked fine, engine temps normal and I passed the dynamic Smog Check here in California.

You should search out that vacuum can, use the classifieds.

You can use just about any single nipple or double nipple vacuum can that will bolt on to one of these distributors so long as it does not have more vacuum advance than the 205p or 205s cans. This includes the can for the newer "Mexican" distributor.

If you use a double vacuum can just use the advance side and leave the retard nipple open.

Check with bugcity.com

That was quick or I missed.

Maybe a salvage yard.
Vanagon Federal 1980-1983 * 2000 had the 07 060 vacuum can.

Good Luck

They are out there but harder to find than a few years ago. Philbin Company in Portland OR rebuilds them too.

Also John at Aircooled.net has some generic ones that would be close.

The original has this curve according to OlsVolks:Advance/Retard Range: Vacuum: 8.5-11deg Adv @ 7.9 In. Hg

The one for a bug John sells is the 07-059 and has a curve of Advance/Retard Range: Vacuum: 8-12deg Adv

Generic SVDA:

Original part numbers the 1976 1/2 - 1978 goes by. A search for one may yield nothing but a search under the alternate number may find it.:

short number 07060
Bosch full number 1 237 121 581
VW part number 021905271F

How I found mine :)

Ok, Thanks for all the information. I'll check with bug city or a scrap yard. Glad to know someone is rebuilding them too.

The forum member vanstories is currently rebuilding a 205S for me. He is in Germany. He is new to the Samba but has been doing it for his German friends for a couple of years. He has sent me pictures throughout the whole process and I gotta say, it is very impressive!

Check out his ad on the Samba

Exchange rate is not bad right now and his shipping is very reasonable, so price is not too bad

raygreenwood, noted that the 581, 07 060 has a 7.9 In. hg spec. He atributes this to the L-jet having a lower vacuum signal than the D-jet. This can seems to be particular to the L-jet. Albeit it has a similar advance spec. as other cans. It operates on a lower vacuum signal.

If I am looking at this right. These cans will work. You could add retard or plug it.

the problem rebuilding the aluminum distributors is that there are many install and forget parts inside that cannot be replaced. The spring retainers for example are plastic that is held on in some with a twist of a small steel tang. If the tang is untwisted it breaks 50% of the time. If it is partially untwisted and the plastic retainer, about 1/2 the side of a bb, removed carefully, the plastic often just shatters from age when touched. The shims in the shim kits are for slightly different shaft sizes although they can be made to work. I've rebuilt many of the aluminum body ones for friends but it is probably better to keep an eye open for new ones on sale. For example, VW dumped a bunch of the 1976 1/2 - Federal 1979 units about 2 - 3 years ago. The ones I got with shipping were new old stock and with shipping from Germany cost all of $119 each. The other alternative is to collect 3 or 4 core units of your buses type then you have the parts with one of those small pieces break.
