I have a 1979 vw bus 2.0L, and my question is do i need to remove the starter? I've removed many beetle engines, and i know they are a different beast, but why would i need to remove the starter for my bus? thanks

The starter doesn't need to be removed for engine removal. The upper starter bolt does need to be taken out however.

Lots of members like to remove the engine and transmission as a unit rather than just the engine. Sometimes it is easier and doesn't take that much longer.

You only need to remove one additional fastener to remove the starter than what is needed to just pull the engine by itself. It is pretty much up to you to decide if you want it out of the way or not. Since I think it makes it easier to get to the bolts above the bellhousing and some of the other stuff, I usually remove it.

Depending on how you support the tranny if you just pull the engine, the weight of the starter can also cause the tranny to roll a bit to one side, making lining up the engine when it goes back in a bit harder.
