I just picked up this beauty on Monday. thanks to Stan @ Stan's classic service in Natic MA for turning me on to this car.

It's a one owner car, purchased in 1971 in Allston MA By prev owner named Henry.

Incredible documentaion - Henry was an engineer and was meticulous about keeping records and ensuring he documented every thing he did. I have a couple binders work of OG paperwork, service records, parts wish lists and sources for them. Parts lists on micro fische....
Many NOS spares

Car came with many spares including an entire Boston engine built DP 1600 that was never installed.

Henry had the FI removed in the mid- 1970's after a battle with it. He told me that he would go to the dealer- they would loan him a part for the FI and week by weeek he slowly swapped out every piece trying to track the issue. (turned out to be simply a loose connection :roll: )

Henry wanted to be able to service the car himself and expect it to last approx. 180K miles. He had the FI removed and installed solex PDSIT's at the dealer I believe. the entire FI system is included with the car.

I would like to put the FI back in it but that is a compltely new realm for me. I am going to run it for the rest of this season as is, and go through the spare mootor over the winter to make sure it is good to go.

Few of us had the "swap dealer part" option and that is the only situation where "replace parts until it works" makes sense. Today we have to use a combination of "be systematic and follow the troubleshooting chart" and the "fix the cheap and simple stuff first like wires and hoses" methods.

Just got back from a little cruise, wow this car is nice to drive! Much more refined than my Notchback. Plus I can put a bunch of shit in it.

Hey Tram I think Henry was on a first name basis with the parts and service guys at the dealer judging by the pile of receipts for service and spares.

I found the original purchase order from 5/71. He ordered the car with the tachometer and VDO temp and pressure gauges and bracket. The tachometer must have failed at some point because I found a receipt from VDO for warranty replacement of it. Some pretty cool stuff in the folders of paperwork.

I noticed today the at the rubber filler neck is cracked so I will have to track that down unless I find 1 or tow of them in the boxes of parts :roll: like most everything else.

My opinion:
I believe it's generally rude to ask people you don't really know what they paid for anything but I think this might be a cultural thing too, based on worldwide location.

That said, I have asked people in private if I needed a price comparison on something. This is with the intention of keeping the information to myself.

Sort of off topic now though so... Nice car too!

Wow hard to believe that car has been in Mass. its whole life.
Not to many survivors come out of Mass. I had two 412 variants when I lived there and they were both pretty rotten even though they were only 12 yrs. old at the time.
Actually don't remember seeing to many air cooled VW's on the road then either come to think of it.

I agree and when i first saw the car I assumed it had either been from the west coast or restored. It has been here it's whole life sitting in a garage about 45 minutes from where I live.

The PO said he drove it for 2 winters here but you would never know looking underneath ...its very nice.

I am planning to take it on a small road trip this weekend up to New Hampshire to visit family. Should be a nice little ride and I can get a feel for how she does under a little stress. I would like to get up to highway speeds because all I have done is putt around on secondaries so far.

Yes, and do the front axle's upper torsion arm adjustment also!
