I have a VW Trike
See it at www.3fowlers.com

This morning I road to work. 45 minute ride
IT was 45 degrees out.
The engine oil temp never got about 160 degrees

I know it will get even colder out as we go into winter so my questions is how cold is to cold for the engine oil

I have good oil pressure no mater if its cold of hot. I have a 32mm oil pump

Air cooled Vw engines have essentially 2 cooling systems

Oil and air..

If your engine oil continues to rise over 230F.. then its becomes problematic.

0-180 cold
180-210 normal
210-230 warm
230-240 hot
240-250 very hot
250+ turn it off

Oil temps are only a portion of the equation as head and cylinder temps can be high and oil temps decent, and vice versa.

Water and spit boil around 212F 100C, so in a perfect world you want oil temps over that to help remove moisture and condensation.. but not too hot to cook the oil..

IR thermometers are semi accurate and really cant pinpoint down a dipstick tube.
I use one to check at the sump plate, near the oil pump, valve covers, and compare that to a thermometer down the dip tube.
Then I check near the exhaust ports on the head (each cylinder) for approx head temps.
Those seems to be the spots for most accurate readings with an IR therm.

You probably ought to at least go to 10-30 oil

Yep I was thinking of going to a different oil for the winter.
I'm using 15-40 now
