I'm sure this has been discussed but is there a specific muffler anyone can recommend? As of now I'm not really sure what it has I know it is not the stock but it has dual tips. Looking for performance for the engine and for a great tone on it. Thanks in advance. |

Are you going to have heater boxes? My 1776cc has heater boxes and the system I am using is similar to this one.

Great tone is subjective.....a 1776 will tend to be a little louder than a stock 1600 in general. So your choice is going to dictate what kind of sound and how loud you want.
First concern is to stay with a 1 3/8" header.
If you want kind of loud, but not obnoxious - a Tri-Mill dual tip is a great choice. Its provides very good performance. Its loud enough that you need to speak up a bit inside the car.
Single quiet pack - I had almost identical dyno numbers as the Tri-Mill. Noticably quieter, but still has a cool tone and you definately know the car isnt stock. Probably my favorite, but doesnt work well if car is slammed.
Hide-away style. Same as above on performance - Very different sound and the quietest of the bunch. Hard to describe it. Very non-VW. |

What do you guys mean by heater box? I've been trying to find out what exhaust it has and it seems like it's a gt dual. Tips. I like the sound. On those but want. Something a little bit more lower toned and still a bit loud. Jbugs recommended a EMPI tuck away dual. Exhaust system for the performance what do you guys think? |

This is a heater box -
You either have these or what are called J tubes (simple tubing) running from the 1 and 3 cylinders to the rear of the car.
The Empi is too big diameter - you want 1 3/8" diameter. Looks like a dual glass pack style. Keep in mind that the fiberglass may blow out over time and it will get louder.
Since Empi boiught Bug Pack, not sure what is what anymore. You can mix and match headers with mufflers, just make sure the flange orientation is the same. |

I have a Kymco 1 5/8" 4-to-1-to2 dual quiet pack on my 1776cc with Kymco 1 5/8" heater boxes. It has been a great system: fit perfect and has held up for 12 years. I never drive it in sub-55F weather, so the heater boxes are rarely used. If you have a big-valve, high-compression engine I would look into something like this.
It has a low, thumping sound to it. Very different than your typical VW exhaust. |

That's a rather large set of headers. A 1-1/2" would give better low end torque.
I have a 1-5/8 on my 2180. |

I've never understood this. Wouldn't the larger pipe of the 1-5/8 reduce backpressure and give you better power and torque? Why would you get better performance with the 1-1/2? |

Glenn: I agree they are a little big. I bought big so incase I stroked it, I could re-use them. My engine makes very little torque under 3000rpm, but screams to 6800rpm :) |

Keep in mind that pressure is a combination of both VOLUME and VELOCITY. This article here explains it a lot better than I could:

Hope that helps. |
