View original topic: Replicating factory undercoating
casey79westfalia Sat Jan 23, 2016 11:48 am

Anyone been able to locate a undercoating that is rubbery and closely matches the original? I am stripping it off in a few areas and re-priming then going to reapply. Removing all the original factory undercoating would just be insane and I am not even going to entertain it. The original seems tan in color when you grind into it and very thick and rubbery. I usually just use 3m aerosol but am looking for suggestions to blend in well after I seam seal areas underneath the van in the coming weeks.

I have the seam sealer shown, we'll it's in a caulk gun version. I'm looking for the the undercoating surrounding seam sealer in the pic.

Did you happen to read the product. description posted above?

There are sausage pack applicators that will dup that, sprayable sealers and a few others.
I have seen pictures of the tool used on the Vanagon chassis and made one myself that fits my different applicators.
It is just a wide paddle to evenly spread the material with.
I prefer the Wurth sealers over the 3M, but that is me.

Mineral spirits on your choice of tool will help keep the material from sticking.

not clear what you mean by "replicate" or by "undercoating surrounding seam sealer "

re the former, are you going to a concours? if not, then modern products are superior to what VW used

VW likely used an older Wurth product and a gun, possibly held by a mech. or robotic arm

surface prep. is the most important thing

I just clean & spray 3M aerosol can, or use Eastwood cans, each year to touch up (but I am outside the salt belts)

Did you read mine, my picture may have focused too much on the seam sealer. I am familiar with seam sealer and undercoating and I do not need seam sealer. I know the product above is a brush on seam sealer and it can be painted over. Again I already have seam sealer. I would like the rubberized undercoating surrounding the seam sealer under the entire van that is similar to what vw used. My undercarriage is very clean and original besides a few areas that I have already grinded the undercoating and seam sealer off of and properly treated with epoxy primer and will want to spray some rubberized undercoating to semi match what's there. I usually use the 3m aerosol as mentioned previously buy it does not seem as rubbery as the type used by vw. I'll take a look at wurth undercoating. Yes I would like to keep the undercarriage pretty factory looking on my syncro since besides a few areas it's factory looking already.

Here is another thick pasty type undercoating/sealer. I have not tried it yet so can't say how good.

I have used this stuff for general coverage undercoating, works real good.

Have also used this:

I use disposable brushes and lay it on thick. It has thickeners, and has a chunky look.

Yes this is the stuff I'm talking/thinking about. Thanks MsTaboo. Dynatron or shutz.i have a shutz spray gun already for spray bed liner. I'll give one of these a shot. Thanks.

Look At the sprayed material, look at the brushed material, look at the junction of the two...... It's seamless...... Same product applied at the same time .... just tooled into critical body unions....... Maybe additional product added or the sprayed just massaged in.

I am using this on treated epoxy primed and bare metal seams on my syncro project and used them on my doka as well. These two part seam sealers are expensive but really stick when prepped correctly. Self levels a bit as well so brush strokes are smooth when dry.

I put on this stuff last year. http://www.opulentwaxoyl.com/Hardwax_Flexible_Underbody_Sealer.php
I read a comparison of various treatments somewhere and this stuff came out on top. I haven't had enough time and miles on it to know if it really does the trick.
