What is the best seal between engine case and cylinder. I can use high temperatures silicon?
Thanks |

Permatex Aviation or Ultra Grey RTV.
Some people use the Copper RTV and there are some more exotic products like Dirko. |

Buy the Dirko. It really is worth it.

X2.
I used Curil-T for the case halfs, and Dirko for the cylinders to case. |

Ask 10 guys get 10 different answers but if it's made in the fatherland and cost more it must be worth it :D |

The problem with a non hardening sealer is you should not use them on something that has no mating surface. this is not true for your pistons at first but will become relevant when your pistons pound out the races. hence a sealer like rtv red like you mentioned is the way to go. all those other sealers are for different vw use and arent even the best for that. vw shops started using yamabond over curil a decade ago. |

Please enlighten me on how a piston pounds out a race. What is this race you are talking about? |

Wow it astounds me which race I am reffering to you do not know. or are you just so ignorant that you want to start an agument over which dope to use. I am not even going to answer this question. |

Ok I'm ignorant but I'm still curious. We don't use dope here, you must have me confused with someone else. :D |

I just wasn't clear on what he was saying, I still need clarification. Maybe I'm an old bastard not hip to all this modern talk about races and dope. Sorry for the confusion I'm afraid I shall remain ignorant. I'm ok with that it means I don't know. :D |

It is obviously wrong to stereotype three kinds of people I for one wont hold it against you for being old. it is the race on the spigot that the cylinders rest on. it is the only race we are referning to in this thread. keep on keepin on old timer no hard feelings. |

Ok thanks now I know. I've used red silicone for a seal there. I've used aviation permatex, hylamar, gascacinch and I've seen 3m weatherstrip adhesive used. They all worked. Stuff I use isn't cool,it's not German and it's cheap.its been around over 50 years any guesses? |

You obviously know your dopes so I wont second guess that it is something good. I am not a mind reader though like I said there are reasons for using a hardening sealer if you could justify what you use under the barrels then it is good enough. I know why people use stuff like kuril under there and that is beacause they have spent to much time around the stuff. I have ultimately decided that it need to be a better seal there and have seen the races pounded out badly enouph that no seal in any form would help. infact instead of us thread jacking the op lets ask him if he has equally flush spigots and will even benefit from a good seal. |

I'm confused by this as well, please enlighten me.
How are cylinders supposed to pound out the case sealing surface? They are clamped down between the case and the heads. Unless the head studs become loose and a piston is dragging in the cylinder or something there is no way for the cylinder to move? |
