and yes, I did it again

Not that I was looking for a new toy but sometimes you stumble over something you just can't resist. This happened in December 2015, I will post the progress in the next hours/days

A matching numbers 72 Notchback which last year came to the Netherlands via Germany whilst been most of his life active in Austria. Not even 80.00 kilometers on the speedo

Car is rockhard, but rusty at some places. The idea is to dismantle the fenders, see how the situation is underneath, solve all the issues and a respray.

Previous owner did already renew breakingstuff around and had the original interiour overhauled (new filling and stitching where needed)

the 5.5" and 7" rims where just a bit too much for me so replaced the 5.5 to the rear and placed 4.5" rims in the front.

After we dismantled the car for the respray we powerwashed everything. Me Happy

Enginebay looks nice, the initial plan was to remove the engine for an enginebay respray, but it seems the engine has never been removed so we keep it in.

Only at the bottom we have some crunchy stuff.

In the front the only real issue is the "beam"

we don't really need to investigate for the paintnumber

also from the inside it doesn't look too bad.

I have seen much younger cars which looked a lot worse, so I am already happy, so is this a good example of a "grandmothers car"

And now some sandblasting before the welding frenzy started.

The windows were still in there for transport so they have been covered before blasting.

lower back blasted,

the kit had become rockhard, so removed and blasted.

The reinforcement beam was already removed so cleaning was easy.

bumpermounts were already renewed, now cleaned out around them.

and back on the way to welder/painter

Doors and fenders are out for paintstripping so we can really see how it looks underneath.

Have not downloaded the primer pictures to my computer, but the new blue jacket looks nice

the dominator Fri Mar 18, 2016 3:08 am

And the re-assembly commences!!

All crews bolts and nuts have been cleaned and zinccoated.

windowseals were still in good order (after 44 years) so gave them a good cleanup and started the reassembly.

What a joy to work with original seals

Fenders loosely installed and the powdercoated wheels with new tires.

Installed the new doorseals and locks so the doors can be closed to compress the new seals a bit

Also those 3 point low back seats are cool. :D We didn't get them over here.

I agree, they are cool, but after having my car rear-ended while I was sitting in a low-back seat, I'll never ride in one again.

Cool Notchback though! Like Tram, I like seeing a late model get some love!

Wow, can't believe I missed this thread last night. Nice score on this car. Should have it back on the road in no time at all! Congrats and welcome.

I have actually seen far fewer second design Notchbacks than 1962s.

Yes, why do you think that is? I suppose Notch sales dropped off over the years, perhaps according to plan?

Probably more like "fat chicks" got cannibalized to fix earlier cars.

Exactly. I always laugh when somebody talks about a rare 1965 notchback. Highest production year for them.

I'm not much of late models but it's great to see a car get the love it deserves. Well done

Yeah, I've only seen (and touched) 3 late type 3s since 2007. One was my own (a 71), the 72 that Tram had, and 1 with a sunroof at the 08 Invasion belonging to a fellow Samba member. I've seen way more 64-65 Notchbacks, and even T-34's in person than late Notchbacks.
Gotta love the dual carb set up on the 72 in this thread. Looks very "natural" in that car. 8)

Thanks for al the positive feedback \:D/ \:D/

The bright-side of this "spa treatment" is that the car was in such a good shape it really doesn't feel like a project (but for me that's also the down-side since I love the search and chase in projects)

Yeah, the dual carb setup looks so natural since it is the original setup for this car, guess in Europe we didn't have that many injection engines in our VW's

the dominator Fri Mar 18, 2016 9:29 pm

and again a nice buildingday with good progress :D
But I have to hurry up since my better half wants me to get crackin again on het 1967 T2A in the background (this is my 3rd in between project since Ive started on the T2A

First we installed the seals and the fenders and afterwards the interior. Sadly the origininal lightblue seals for the fenders are nowhere to be found and the OG had shrinked to much..... So if anybody has a spare set marine-blue seals for my notch, don't hesitate to inform me!

The trim was so battered and bruized we decided to order a new set, so for the purists I have a complete OG set on stock.

New trunk seals glued in, original upholstry still looks tidy after 44 years.

Polished the lower part so re-installed the bumpers.

the dominator Fri Mar 18, 2016 9:38 pm

And the notch is ready, we managed to give it the "Royal Spa Treatment" within a 3 months period and I must say, she really looks some years younger

Can't wait to get cruisin, our first local VW-club cruise is on easter sunday

I try to upload some more pics of the works on the crusty parts (won't be too much pictures since there weren't that much bad spots.

And now it's back on track with the 1967 T2A and my 1948 US Farmall Cub (my first Liquid Cooled project  )

I can imagine it is not the best seat (not even the best car) for any collision, but luckily this is not my daily driver. Otherwise I would at least have some kind of headrest installed or even other seats.

The plan is to go on a roadtrip to Austria this summer, we have the adress of the original owner, see if we can find him and exchange stories/pictures (if he still has some pics of the car when he owned it) maybe for this roadtrip we'll install some slide-over headrests. At least they can be removed for pictures.

the dominator Sat Mar 19, 2016 5:37 am

It's all in the details.

From a rusty, crusty reinforcement:

Via a partly removed reinforcement in order to search non crusty metal after sandblasting:

to this:

Since the earlier Notches didn't have this rusty, crusty nightmare of a reinforcement we decided to let go of it.
What isn't there can't cause issues later

Nice job you did there, not many later notches around.
Looking good
