Cal look is what got me in to these cars and I still like it now
100% the same here - Cal look got me into VWs and "the look" is in my blood therefore! Times change and I've seen the resto-cal, hood ride and patina look and I'm just not into those although I respect the choices of others who are.
Lookin at your '70 gives me goose bumps lol. Looks like the Porsche Guards Red one piece window 8 spoke wearin' '74 I drove back in the day in my junior and senior years of high school.
I'm not 100% sure given the lighting in the pic, but aren't those 8 spokes a gold-ish color? To this day I long to slap some gold or bronze 8 spokes on my '59, and all that stops me is the dang wide-five bolt pattern my car has. I guess I could go for the 5 spokes, as long as they're gold or bronze :-) but I lust for the 8's! |

I'm looking forward to seeing how the metal is reworked to remove the '63 defrost vents. I won't do it because defrost function is required in WA, so something has to at least look the part, but I will find that metalwork very interesting!
I'm also looking forward to seeing a modern 1 piece window install. I always thought they looked great, but they have a reputation for not working very well. While I suppose sealing is less of an issue where you are I bet you will have them working well, seeing the quality of work on your build.
The real Lucas signals in place of of the silly horn grills is a great traditional touch. 8) |

| Thanks for the kind words. I would like to do one piece windows, but I know that they just never work well. I`m going to not use the door window aluminum molding and powder coat the vent window frames black. |

Love your build, really coming along nicely! Nothing better than a Cal Look to me.
You’ve probably already seen this, but here’s the best work I’ve seen deleting the defrost vents, scroll down this page:

I’m considering going this route on my 66 project. But I’ve never formed that complex a piece before, so not really sure.
Keep up the great work!

That'll look great - dechromed body and blacked out trim. Looking forward to seeing your progress! |

Not much progress on the bodywork, so I thought I would post a few pictures of some of the parts I`ve collected for it.
15x5.5 Fuchs replicas detailed by Hans.
Custom Scat Pro 90 seats with houndstooth inserts.
Welded OEM fan by Jason Eggum.
VDO gauges and panels.
Concept One fan shroud.
And an ARPM alternator stand.

I stopped Above And Beyond today for a little check up. Craig had started the Heater vent delete. It looks a little rough still but he`s just getting started. He basically pie cut the old metal and folded it down over the outlet. Next he is going to clean up the holes and fill them in with extra metal.

The past few months have been tough but I finally got the body off of the pan. Next step is to get the body over to the dustless blaster and the floorpan to my garage to get redone.

| It is, but I`m going with new pans anyway. These are pretty beat up. And I don`t need the seat tracks and jack points anyway. |

| Nothing too exciting happening yet. The body is currently in body shop jail. Nothing has been done to the body since I posted the last pictures. I ran into a major snag with the DMV trying to verify the VIN since I don`t have an actual registration from the previous owner. I thought it was fine and the process was underway when suddenly I was told that the whole car needed to be seen in order to verify the VIN. Except I had totally disassembled it by then. And I was unaware that the DMV had entered the car back into the system on my first visit. So registration fees as well as late fees have been piling up. So I had to drag the pan as well as a complete front beam and transaxle to the body shop, assemble them, and have a set of wheels and tires, and a complete engine all under the same roof in order to get it verified. I found a retired hot rod guy that does this to come out and ok it. But I still needed to have a lien put on it since I still didn`t have an old registration. Which took 7 weeks to get done. Now I`m waiting for the verifier to submit his paperwork to the DMV before I can go in and pay all the fees and get it fully registered into my name... which has also been delayed due to Covid19. Anyway, I did some work on the floorpan cleaning it up and removing the old pan halves and fitting new Wolfsburg West halves. I will have a friend help me with the welding and fabrication on the pan once I get the registration sorted out. It`s been very stressful. My plans for the pan are to weld in new halves, make custom seat mounts, brace the clutch tube, put in a bigger fuel line with AN fittings, remove the heater knob and cable outlets, move the shifter back, install mid mount brackets, mount an Odyssey battery and have it all powder coated. |

Here are some pictures of the work I have done so far. It was pretty and solid but pitted and beat up. So it was better to just put new halves in.
I`ve never done this before but the Wolfsburg West pans pretty much dropped right in. Nothing is perfect though so I did a bunch of fine tunes on them to get to fit the way I like. It seems that the could come a little closer to the tunnel though. |

I`m debating on cutting the bottom of the tunnel off to work on everything or just cut access panels into the side. I can get a new bottom piece from Europe so I may go that way.

Hey Bryan, I feel your DMV pain!
I learned that before doing anything to my new VW acquisitions, I must first appease the DMV gods!
When working on getting the title for my '62, I was told during my first visit that an inspection is required because I did not have the old title . . . it had been "out of the system" for over ten years.
The jerk at the counter told me 4 times that the car would need to be off-loaded from the tow vehicle because DMV staff will not get up on a trailer to check the vin.
4 TIMES! Okay . . . I got the point.
So . . . I take a day off from work to haul my '62 to their office for inspection.
That's when Mr. a-hole at the DMV tells me he is unable to inspect the car because there's no engine in it. I was just about ready to choke him! Why he didn't mention this before . . . who knows! He was too worried about stepping up on a trailer.
I took the car home, raided my junk pile and built an "engine" for the car . . . nothing but an old block, pair of heads, and a fan housing looks enough like an engine for the DMV eggspurts! :P
Glad to see you are making progress!
Have you welded the new pans yet? |
