My car has the correct heater pull and correct heater boxes..but no cable or attachments. My questions are:

What's missing? obviously a cable and a cable pin..what else?

how does it work? what/where is the return spring mechanism?

do you pull then turn to lock in the pulled position?

Hi koolerkrotch discovered something about?

You're missing the one piece heater cable and fastening pin. The cable is bent mid length and slides up inside your handle. A small two-step pin is inserted through the side of the handle and into the opposing wall to secure the cable in place. A portion of the pin (wider than the hole just mentioned) remains protruding from the side of the handle. This protrusion cams up on the slanted side of the tube that the cable goes through back to the heater boxes. Once everything is connected at the boxes, you lift your handle up and rotate it counter clockwise approximately 90 degrees to close the heater box vents and (theoretically anyway) start heating the car. You can get both the pin and cable from Kaefer Nostalgia and/or possibly from Argentina. If you don't have the requisite hardware to attach the cable ends to the heater boxes, you can secure those from Wolfsburg West (among others)

P.S. If you're going to invest in that cable and pin, you might want to spring for a better looking handle. There's an ivory one currently listed in the classifieds that would be a definite upgrade. The ivory ones aren't seen as often as the black ones, and those that do tend to show the wear and tear a lot more than the black ones. So if you can find a decently looking ivory one, I'd go for it were it me. Just a thought...

Great explanation Bakersam, thanks

You are welcome. One more thing. You asked about the spring mechanism that makes this all operate. The vent doors back in the heater boxes are spring loaded to the open position. When you release the heater handle, the spring tension will automatically pull the vent doors back down into the open (no heating) position.

Yes. That is the correct cable. Also do not forget the pin needed to hold it inside the handle...http://www.kaefer-nostalgie.com/content/heater-knob-cable-pin-1950-52

having recently been thru this i can add a few words . the cable is longer on one side than the other for my 51 , took me a while to figure out i had it in assbackwards , pulled it back out n turned it 180 fixed that ....but then it wouldnt turn off .

so here is my CHEAP TRICK/FIX ,,,, once everything was all installed , pull up on the lever and the heater boxes opened , but when i went to turn it off , the springs on the heater boxes werent strong enough to pull the cable back to the closed position ..... i used a small piece of wooden dowel from one of those 4rth of july flags ,,,, stick it in the handle and mark the dowel thru the pin hole with a marker , now cut it off just shy of the mark , slip it in the handle before you install it , now when i turn off the heater by pushing down on it the piece of wood pushes the cable down and turns off the heater as intended , its like a 3 inch piece of dowel saved the day :-)

My Aug 52 car is missing the cables, i think I have everything else, with the possible exception of the hardware to attach the cables to the heater boxes. My question is.. I'm confused about the cable. It is a single cable that's bent in the middle where or goes over the pin at the handle, or do you order two cables and each one has a loop at the end?

Also, do you feed the cable(s) in from knob opening? Thanks.

Single cable install and how it connects to the knob the same as the later type till end of 1967 model year.

Poke a flashlight down the hole in the chassi and peer in. You will find the main hole bottoms out and two smaller pipes welded in to there.

Glad to help. Highly recommend this workshop manual:

https://www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/DetailsList.cfm?ID=book1a

Yes it is pricey, but it is three or four times more manual than any other out there. Once upon a time the VW workshop manuals were for dealer employees eyes only, and were updated year after year. So the most accurate manuals made for these old ACVWs.
