View original topic: Replace Rear Heater Core

The area directly below the vent located on the floor behind the passenger side front seat is filling with coolant when the rear vent is on.

Can anyone outline the process of replacing the rear heater core on a '01 MVW? Is the process outlined in the Bentley manuals?

An option to consider is to just bypass the rear heater core for the summer. The heater cores run separately, so one can still have the heat in the front and not have coolant run out of the rear one when someone spins the rear heater knob

I am in the north east rust belt and current plans are to store the van during the winter...but that still seems like a negative "fix"

I found a place selling a core for $15....seems like this shouldn't be too hard.

Here's a diagram ...no procedure in Alldata

Thanks, that's helpful! I though it was flipped around a bit I guess...I was visualizing that 9 and 10 would have been to the right not left. I'll try and take some pictures when I get the core and dig into this.

Hello folks. I'm reviving this old thread because I had a shop bypass my rear heater when it started leaking this summer. The hose "701819372G" had burst and I looked for a replacement for ages. (One recently appeared on Ebay so I bought it).

I found some diagrams (Partsouq and Vanagain) that show this hose way up at the top of the engine (which I don't think can be right).

This 2003 VW EuroVan Accessories Parts List (PDF!) lists the "701819372G" twice. Once at the top of this engine, but a second time where it seems to show the hose (un-numbered) in the lower left-hand corner of the diagram on Page 28. (I've attached the image below). It also shows a bulkhead coolant flange and a hose cradle that looks like it could be mounted on the underside of the carriage. (I don't have the car with me right now otherwise I'd climb under and check).

Can someone provide some guidance about where to find the rear heater 701819372G hose and how to install it in order to return rear heat to the EV this cold, long winter? Thank you!

The part 701819372G is up on the firewall, near to the transmission mount. It connects to a rigid pipe that makes its way to near the rear heat exchanger. If your leak is running down the pipes, you may need this one or a rigid pipe has cracked.

If your leak is related to the hoses connected to your rear heater core, you should be looking for:

(21) 701819895A
water hose / feed
for vehicles with 2nd. heat exchanger and warm air vent passenger compartment step
(23) 701819896A
water hose / return

Thank you @Joshwa. The hose 701819372G is split (they gave me the old, split part so I could try to either replicate it or find a used version of the same). The shop removed the old hose and capped the rigid pipe, I suppose, at the firewall.

Is this a hard job to do? (Is there access to where hose 701819372G goes and is it pretty straightforward to wiggle on the replacement?)

Thanks in advance for your help!

If you can't find a replacement, you can make one. There's videos on YouTube, but you buy a kit from Rockauto with correct diameter springs, bend them into the shape you need, and heat them up with a propane torch. They'll then hold that shape.

Hey @qval.

I ordered the replacement part, so it should arrive next week, so I'll have the actual correct hose (and the clamps) that I need to do the job.

My question is about the job... is it hard to do and does anyone know of a video or walk-through that describes replacing it?
