View original topic: '67 Sedan and Nardi Horn Button Question

I found a couple threads, but none seemed to address by questions. Nardi Classic wheel and Nardi Hub for my '67 Bug. The turn signal cancelling ring from my stock wheel (actully getting a new one, but same idea) will bolt to the bottm of the hub.

The ONLY instructions with the hub (none at all with the wheel) say: Warning!! Use original horn button device to complete installation.

The horn button has TWO contacts (Crowder's says he only carries two contact buttons, but can order a single. That will take too long, I think). I realize the brown wire will connect to one contact using the extension wire that came with it, but what is the best way to connect the other contact? And where? I assume it needs to make contact with the steering column somehow. Can I use a '71-ON Horn Contact Ring/Cancelling Ring combo at the base of the hub and connect that wire to the second contact?

This is probably more simple than I'm seeing, but I appreciate any help.

Don't concern yourself with the two horn button contacts. On early VWs, the steering wheel should already be grounded to the chassis of the car via the steering shaft to the steering box (there should be a grounding cable shaped like handcuffs) that bypass the rubber steering coupler at the base of the steering shaft.

Attach the factory VW ground wire coming out of the steering tube to the center most contact. Install the button. Now depress the button, it should activate the horn. If it does not, you'll need to run a ground wire from the 2nd contact on the horn button, to another known ground to complete the circuit.

Thanks, RareAir, I'll try that.

If I do have to add a ground wire, anyone know if the '71 Horn Contact Ring/Cancelling Ring combo will fit/work?

A quick explanation of the horn circuit in the early and mid '60's horn circuit...

The steering column and shaft is isolated from ground by design. it is set in rubber top and bottom and the shaft has the rag joint keeping it electrically disconnected from the steering box. A fuse protected 12 volts is applied to the horn. The other horn lead is connected to the steering column under the gas tank. The spring loaded ball bearing that supports the upper end of the steering shaft connects this 12 volts with the steering wheel. The horn button connects the steering wheel to the wire that runs down the column. That wire connects to one of the bolts on the steering box side of the rag joint and so provides a ground for that wire through the steering box. If you box is loose the horn may only work when you turn the wheel because it may be a poor ground.

Thanks, EV. That's useful info.

Indeed- excellent, concise description of an oft-perplexing circuit! 8)

Installed it today; just a tad over 14" diameter. Thanks, to the help in this thread, it went smoothly. Used both contacts and made a "ground" wire attached to the turn signal cancel ring. I'm not crazy about the two VW buttons that Nardi offers; on is a red VW and the other is a blue and red wolfsburg Crest. I'd prefer a Crest like the factory VW button if I can find something.

Did the turn signal cancelling work ok? Did you buy the Crowder hub/adapter or the actual Nardi one?

Yes, the turn signal cancels perfectly. I got the hub from Crowder's, but it's a Nardi hub. I swapped the 14+ inch wheel for the 15+ because it felt a little bit small. The 15" feels just right. My VW wheel is 16 inches. The horn works perfectly also.

The steering wheel may be live now...( sorta).

Let us know if you get a tingling shocking feeling when you rest you hand on the spoke metal and lay your arm on the door window opening .. .

On humid days.. when the sweat is abundant.. my Flat 4 sure does.. (Not sure if the Nardi is similar.)

Take a test lamp to a good ground and touch the wheel spokes.. if it lights a test lamp.. it may also light you up.. a lil'

Next go round.. Im mounting a remote horn button.

I'll give that a try in the next few days.

No to both. No tingle and the test light doesn't light. All seems good.
