Hi all,
I am trying to install new floorpans on a regular 74 beetle.I am having trouble fitting the rear side of the pans. I am about 1/3 inch on the frame side in the back end. I was wondering if I have to modify the rear outer mount point in order to make it fit or.. will that mess up the alignment once I try and get the body back on?

| I don't like the pans with that rear cross brace attached. The cross brace sometimes needs to be reshaped to fit better against the tunnel. Best thing to do is drop the body on and see how things fit before you start welding. Adjust and reshape as necessary. |

| Sounds good.. mine was in really poor shape and needed to be changed.. is there any measuring chart or anything? I know that I probably should have measured before but I got this chasis all cut out. |

Found this in the photo archives. No idea what year this is for but it looks early. Search the photo archives for "pan dimensions" for more measurements. You can measure the bolt holes on the body to double check, but I would just put the body on the chassis to make sure it all lines up. You need to be as acurate as you can but you can be off by 1mm and things should still fit.

I use a cut off original package tray as a jig to line them up because it's easier than putting the entire body back on. I reshape the cross brace with a hammer until it fits.

Short of dropping the body back on to line all those outer body bolt holes up so you can tack your pans on before final spot welding (best way), you could make cardboard templates of the body mounting holes, and transfer that to the pan holes to line them up before tacking. You don't want to weld those pans on without making sure all the body mounting holes line up with the pan holes, or else you'll be in for a whole new set of problems. |
