The cross shaft retaining pin in these early boxes can cause real problems if it is removed without first grinding away the peened end portion. When the unground pin is driven out (to change spider gears), the thin wall of the cast iron diff housing cracks .. virtually every time. This crack often goes unnoticed, and the housing can no longer reliably retain the pin.

This issue is with split case transaxles only, and is VERY common. The diff housing is machined too thin in this area. Once the pin is removed, the crack can sometimes be difficult to see.

This particular pin appears reused. It's wise to replace solid pins with some type of roll pin.
