My 1974 Super Beetle has VDO gauges, i.e. RPM, oil temp and oil pressure. They all seem to work fine except the oil pressure gauge. As soon as you turn the key on, the oil pressure gauge goes to max reading 80psi plus.
It stays there all the time, never goes down regardless on how long or hard you've driven the car. The oil light inside the Speedometer seems to be working normally however.
The sender has two lead wires. Could they be reversed? Does anyone have an idea what the problem could be? Thanks for you help. Andy |

If the gauge is pegged like that the signal is grounded out, check signal wire from gauge to sender. |

Did you put teflon tape around the OP sender? |

Yeah, I'd get a new spool of wire, and temporarily run a new wire OUTSIDE of the VW directly from the gauge to the sending unit, and try that first, then go from there.
On VDO Dual post oil sender unit WK goes to idiot light and G goes to oil pressure.
I've had my VDO oil pressure gauge/sender since 1977, never had any issues. |

Thank you guys for your thoughtful replies. Turns out that the oil pressure sender was bad VDO #360-006. Just installed a new one and it works great, have a pretty steady 20 to 40 pounds depending on engine RPM. Thanks again, Andy |
