I still want to know what the significance of a '86.5 is. Mine has an October of 86 stamped on the gutter rail. Its called an '87.
The part I need is the metal skin behind the kitchen. Is that different from year to year (not meaning RHD/left slider). Someone I talked to suggested I get a clip from a donor. As in, no parts on the market anymore. True?

Pretty much any car built in Oct of 86 would have been sold as a '87 model in the US market. That is the way it has been since early in the automotive era. |

It is not you. Most of the opinions expressed are positive...there is always some negative in every crowd. We tolerate the gof. |

I hope you are not refering to my rather lengthy post on the Type 2 vs T2 confusion, even though your reply came right after mine. If so, Im sorry for that.
That was not ment as criticism on your initial post at all. You are quite correct in referring to your Vanagon as a Type 2.
But every time someone mentions the "Type 2" name, it escalates into a "what is the correct name for our vans"-discussion.
As for basics, you could say there are early and late vans, and the crossover year for each item is somewhat different. It depends if you are talking about body, brakes, electrical and so on.
Your 86 would be a late model in every aspect, except some of the suspension parts. |

Vanagon parts are interchangeable.
Some.
Early 80 to 85, 86 to 91 are the groups of more compatible vehicle groups.
Minus Syncro, & the Pickup trucks.
Stick with 86 2wd vehicles for parts compatibility. |

Just off the top of my head, sliding door parts, front door check straps, and rear wheel bearing. Common parts on our Vanagons that are on Bay windows. |

Thread cleaned up.
Let me reiterate what some seem to be missing:
All Vanagons are Type 2 Volkswagens!
All Vanagons are T3/T25 Type 2's!
The topic at hand: The OP has a 1986 Vanagon and wants to know what parts from other Vanagons interchange with said 1986 Vanagon. Let's stick to the topic at hand, please. |

Well, when you do pick it up you have to post a picture to introduce yourself formally, (8x10 color glossy with a dog on the front seat to show your an all around nice guy.) Otherwise we just will not believe you and call you wanna be names and the like.
The forum is a good /great place for info. However, best to read the FAQ up at the top of the forum page as it will answer many of your questions that you can still ask anyway!
Welcome to the addiction! |

This hasn't been running in a while so:
Before you try to start it remove the belt for the alternator-it goes to the water pump too. See if you can turn over the pulley for the water pump so you know that it is easy to rotate and not rusted/seized.
Then put the alternator belt back on.
Has the battery got any charge at all? You can try charging it so you don't spend a hundred bucks on a battery, but you will probably have to.
if that doesn't work go out and buy a battery, (Group 41 size.) Or you could jump start it. make sure there is something over the top of the positive battery terminal so there is no chance of it shorting out against the metal cover that hides the battery.
Buy a fire extinguisher too-seriously.
Before you do try to start it, the gas is old and when gas gets old it turns into a varnish that can clog the fuel injectors.
So take off the gas cap and sniff the gas to see if it still smells like gas. If you smell a varnish type smell your going to need to drain the gas and the fuel lines all the way to the fuel injectors. And probably get new or rebuilt injectors.
While you are at it CHECK THE CONDITION OF THE FUEL LINES IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. These are rubber lines that get old and crack letting fuel leak out-the number one cause of fires in Vanagons.
Hence the fire extinguisher. Told you I was serious.
So when you do get battery power turn the key to ON just to see if you have how much gas in the tank?
When you do turn the key to the "ON" position listen for the fuel pump to build up pressure. So you know that it is working.
If your gas was good and you are at the point to start it.
Don't start it.
Disconnect the wire to the center of the distributor so it cannot start.
Now turn the key to see if it will turn over.
The engine has been sitting-you want to get some oil pressure built up before you start it.
If it turns over, do it a few time without draining the battery just to get the oil pressure up- see if the oil pressure light on the dash goes out.
It has only been a few months since WHEN? possibly over heated?
After you get it home and before you run out to get the battery if it needs one.
Pull the plugs as has been suggested and squirt a penetrent oil down into the cylinders just to loosen them up if they are stuck-remember the water pump needing to rotate-pistons need to move freely too! if they overheated it the might have blown a head gasket possibly letting water down into a cylinder which means rust.
If you leave the plugs out when you try the starter to see if it will turn over you will not need to remove the wire from the distributor.
Then reconnect the wire to the center of the distributor cap and try to start it. Or put the plugs back in.
You did check the oil level didn't you?
And the level of coolant in the big fat white/yellowish container in the engine compartment. It needs to be completely full.
Get back to us and tell us what happened. Good luck.

I stopped recommending bus depot to anybody a while back since literally every one of my orders with them were delayed, I received the wrong parts, items dropped from order without warning, parts not in stock even though quoted that they were or items missing etc.

Good to know. My last business with them was a walk in pick up. Had everything I wanted. Shipping on a timely basis must be a nightmare for them...they are over hill and dale out in the sticks! Beautiful countryside...lucky people! |
