I remember watching that on TV, I was 14, and my Mom just kept saying "WOW" over and over.

Yup, and 50 years ago tomorrow he did it. Amazing bit of history to observe and live through. Right up there with the JFK tragedy and 9/11 in my lifetime, though both of those outrank the resignation IMHO.

Some friends and I had just returned from a 7 day backpacking trip in the Yosemite back county and we found a newspaper in the campground where we parked the car. Big bold print headline, "Nixon Resigns".

55 years ago today, some folks got together on a farm in New York to listen to music and fornicate in the mud.

Yesterday, 47 years ago, I was in San Jose hitchhiking my way to Yosemite when over the radio it was announced that Elvis died.

I've posted this before, but this happened when I was just under 5. It is a vivid memory, though. My mom made my brothers and I stay home to watch the procession on TV. It was silent, save for the clopping of hooves on the street. Haunting.

80 years ago today: death of Hitler

Abscate Wed Apr 30, 2025 5:22 pm

You can say lots of bad things about Hitler, but he did kill Hitler.

End of Vietnam war.

"On April 30, 1975, NVA tanks rolled through the gate of the Presidential Palace in Saigon, effectively ending the war."

I just cannot fathom the absolute joy back then when USA/UK folks heard about the success of the D-Day landing or the death of Hitler.

I know VE day/German surrender was just a week after Hitler's death, but must've been soon expected after the battle of the Bulge and Hitler's death.

My dad was in the Army Air Corps in WW2 in Europe, became a sergeant, and NEVER spoke a word about it....

My grandfathers were away in the Pacific for years. One grandmother moved back to her dad's house, with 2 kids. The other moved back to her folks house with kids and her 4 sisters all moved back as well. War rationing was real. Tires. Gas, food, try fixing a car. Even after the war, rationing in England continued. The grandmother's all had high school friends who were never coming home.
This was not some pissant war where we were encouraged to go shopping.

The only stories I got about the grandfathers war was from the surving buddies at the funeral wake. They only told the funny ones.

My mother used to talk about the "Victory Garden" that she and my Grandmother planted during WWII.
After My grandmother passed, as we were cleaning out her house, I chatted up the neighbors, they remembered the Victory Garden as well.

Mom, told us of the Government rationed butter that came with a yellow die packet to make it more appealing. The butter arrived white.

The stories were endless.

Me grandpappy was a ship yard foreman at Kaiser, building Liberty ships, he got extra ration cards for gasoline and tires as he drove a carpool for shipyard workers. He used a second hand hearse fitted with seats for this. He was too young for WW1, and too old for WW2 as for fighting. He lucked out. Me, I was too young for Vietnam, But in junior high I had friends who had relatives that got drafted for it, and we used to talk about what we would do if drafted when we hit 18. Most of us thought the airforce would be best, most wanted to be fighter pilots, but one kid thought being a B-52 crew was better, when asked why, he stated that if shot down he wanted to be with others to parachute behind enemy lines rather than be a lone fighter pilot. We though about it, and determined he made good sense. That war ended before we turned 18.

We need to try to avoid wars, very costly. But sometimes the bad guys just plain need killing. Such is life, or death

Good stories of wartime.

We all need to remember that the guys who made sure soldiers has gasoline, ammunition, food, uniforms, etc. also all did their part.
