Hello everyone! I'm just back from a two-day, 20 hour drive to Florida where I delivered an oval window bug and brought back a 71 bay window. I'm super excited to have one and a big 'thank you' to Nathan.
Enjoyed talking to so many people at every rest area I stopped at who wanted to tell their VW story. Seems that everyone over a certain age has at least one to tell. And most are happy except for one of my wife's co-workers who as a child was laying on that flat area above the engine and Dad accelerated from a stop sign, the door flipped up and she fell out the back. She grabbed the bumper and he drug her just a few feet since his wife and the other kids were screaming at him that Maria was dead in the road.
If you all are like the folks in the oval window forum then it didn't happen without pictures. Here is proof that I am now one of you.
I have worked my way through about half the stupid questions sticky so I will wait until I have finished that before I bore you all with my stupid questions (which I will post in the appropriate place).
Lots of rust in all the usual places; I'll get to that one day (or not).
I just want to get her running and enjoy cruising town with my wife. Nathan says it probably needs a clutch and throw out bearing and it makes a clunking sound as it turns over. Time to get my hands dirty!

Thank you. Was this the last year for the upright engine? It's the same one as in my ghia. If I can work on that one I should be ok on this one.

So I got some time to spend with the bus. Just wanted to try to get it running. Wouldn't start for nothing. I think this had something to do with it:
So I took the rotor off my 71 Ghia as well as a new distributor cap since the one on the bus was full of crud and it started right up! But with a very nasty rattle/grinding type sound.
Dropped the engine and found lots of shiny metal bits:
I'm guessing this is from the starter not disengaging? Here are some more shots:
Here it is on the stand. I think I'll clean it up and replace the clutch and flywheel if you all think I should or do they look ok to you all? Is there an easy way to test the starter or do I just replace it?
I also killed two rats that had taken up residence. Definitely the hardest job all day.

This looks shinny. Is the flywheel hitting. What trans is that?

your circle is just a camera flash but all the silver points are bits of metal. As far as I know it is the transmission that's been on it for at least the past 10 years. The flywheel is chewed up a little but not too bad imho. Does the starter look ok to you all?

Use a magnet and see if the metal flakes are metal.
Some of the flywheel teeth look like they have been slammed into by the starter bendix (gear)
With the starter in the trans. Hook up jumper cables and test the starter.
The starter gear should twist slightly as it is coming out and not start spinning until it is almost all the way out.
The starter gear should completely retract every time you disconnect power from the starter.

Well I should listen to my elders. That wasn't just a camera flash; it was where the flywheel was rubbing. It was doing it in four places too.
Here is where I stand today:
I discovered that I have almost an eighth inch free play. Quite a bit more than .004, huh? So I'll be tearing into this case. Ordered my Tom Wilson book on rebuilding these things too. I'll let you all know how it goes; please offer comments or scathing criticism as I enter unknown territory. I can take it! My friend who has forgotten more about air cooled vw engines than I'll ever know said I'm probably looking at align-boring. I'll post pictures of what I find and wait for your advice.

Having lots of fun and everyone I talk to about it has a bus story. Talked to a friend last night who as a youngster toured Europe with his family in a vw camper. He looked very nostalgic as he reminisced. Something about these vehicles, isn't there?

This is extreme but will give you the idea of what is going on. Hopefully your case is not this bad.
Find a shop that specializes in VW's. I also recommend buying the bearings from the machine shop. That way they are sure to fit right.

You're screwed now.. You own a bus! Welcome to the addiction! I hope you keep posting your progress as you go through it.
My link below shows me going through my 70's mechanicals. These things drive wonderfully once they are put back to original condition while replacing worn parts, etc.. |

Wait! Is your flywheel off? End play must only be measured with the flywheel on and torqued down!
Not to bag on you, but that engine looks a little dirty to be sitting there with the cylinders off if you plan on putting it back together. A few hours in a body shop with an open engine orifice was enough to clog the pushrod oil galleries with dust on an engine I saw last week. I hope you really cleaned the outside of that case before opening the cylinder spigots, or you might have to strip it down for cleaning anyway.
Crankcase hygiene is pretty important on an engine with no oil filter…

No the flywheel is still attached and yes I did get most of the topsoil off before removing the cylinders. I plan to throughly clean everything if this case is salvagable. Going by my flaps to borrow a pulley puller; didn't have an issue when i rebuilt my 36hp but this one will not budge. Thanks for looking in and your comments; all you guys rock!

Start soaking the pulley with some rust penetrant and give the center of the pulley some love taps.
Pull from the two slots in the center. If you crab it from its outer circumference chances are you will bend it.

Why didn't I come in and read this first? So I'll be in the market for a new pulley. In my defense, I couldn't find a puller that would fit the inside holes and the pulley had a big crack in it anyway. So it took me and four of my best friends to get it out.
I'm sure you old hats have seen this many times before and are sitting there shaking your heads and laughing at me. Have mercy on a newby like me.
And what's up with these cylinder heads? Anyone recognize this? Any good or just throw them away?
I didn't clean that; it came off that clean.
