As always thanks to all the posted information!
This should be used as reference material only. Inspect your parts to make sure they match. The information out there is sparse and the parts books leave a lot to be desired.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ignition/Steering Lock ID
Let's start with the parts descriptions. Between the parts and repair manuals, it seems VW could not make up their minds on what to call these parts. So I am using the parts manual descriptions. The following parts can be found by them self's or in a number of combinations.
1. Ignition/Steering Lock Housing
2. Steering Lock
3. Ignition Starter Switch
4. Lock Cylinder with keys
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IGNITION/STEERING LOCK HOUSING (steering column)
I was unable to locate part numbers for these.
Note: the later housing came with either one or two set screws to hold the steering lock in place.
1975-79 Steering lock housing with plastic cover. Note the half round and square ends on the white ignition switch.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
STEERING LOCK (ignition barrel)
1968-69 Steering lock
211 905 889 - Non-locking Intermediate housing: note square portion that changes to round, this has no lock pin to engage in the steering shaft.
1968-69 Steering lock
211 905 887 - Note: square portion that changes to round with lock pin protruding from the end of it.
1970 only Steering lock
211 905 887 A - Note: door buzzer wire connection, tapered cylinder with lock pin.
1971 Steering lock
211 905 859 B
No Pic?
1971-? Steering lock
211 905 887 C - Note: I could not find any information on this. Seen some pix of it in 1971? It is listed by Vendors as fitting 71-74?
1972-M74 Steering lock
211 905 887 D - Note: (71 to 74 ch.#164 059) will fit 1971 with some modification to the Steering lock housing.
M74-79 Steering lock
211 905 851 BH - Note: (74 from ch.#164 060 to 1979)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Can someone please verify what year(s) this goes to?
I was told it came out of a '71 bus. Looking at the above pictures it looks like a '68-69.
I do know it won't fit a '73.
Thank you! |

Do you still have this part? I am in desperate need of the ignition/steering lock housing for a 69 T2. |
