1500 Ghia all stock solex 31 pict 2 carb have only been able to manage 18mpg combined... somethings up as I used to get 20 in my bus and the best mpg's yet was my 61 rag with a 1641 at 30mpg on average...

somethings up with my ghia, I've only had it a couple weeks and supposedly it's been mechanically maintained, runs decent but idles weird and it's obvious I need to do something to it this is ridiculous....

post your MPG's, motor and carb...

I just got back from an 800+ mile trip in my bone stock 36hp 58. I managed around 32 mpg, and that was with a ton of crazy hills, where most of the time I had her to the floor just to get up them. 👍

Maybe carb jet sizes too?

I was thinking maybe it would be better to try to solve this low MPG problem than get a list of others stuff?

Anyway, the 1500cc in my stock Bus gets around 22 - all stock, 28 PICT carb.
22 is kinda low too, it's supposed to get 25.

A Ghia should get better MPG than a Bus...

hoping to have a moment today to fix it... I know it not right I just started this thread because I'm a gluten for punishment.. or maybe just being lazy and my subliminal way to hear someone say "hey I had that same problem, just check your muffler bearings" or some other madness...

63 vwnotch Sun Oct 02, 2016 7:44 pm

lamer checking in... havent had time to tune motor, gave it a tune up today and I could seriously see the difference.. it ran ok before but runs great now..... part of the electric choke was loose and wire ground on generator...

will send what kind of mileage I get now...

While I average just 14 mpg :( with the dual Dellorto'd, 120 cammed, 2276 in the Dormy, at least they are definitely very happy miles! :D

My Singlecab gets 23 mpg w/ new (NOS) stock 1500, w/ a 30 pict 2 carb & freeway Flyer trans.

63 vwnotch Sat Oct 22, 2016 7:59 pm

okay I addressed a few issues, I now have managed 22 in the city... I may rebuild the carb as I think it's somewhat varnished....

I will drive some combo miles and see where I can push my mpg's, but so far I'm going in the right direction...

Both my 62 and 63 Bugs have basic 1600cc Single Port engines and both get 27 mpg regardless of town or highway and regardless of how hard or easy I drive them.

We had our engine rebuilt by a local guy who does Porsche racers... (Engine was over-cammed & mis-balanced when we got the car, and there aren't a lot of VW engine builders in our neighborhood.) Asked him to make it "around 2 liters"; we wanted to keep good acceleration & add low-end torque, but mostly to quiet it down.

He did all that we asked. Kept the Weber 44's (re-jetted), added DRD racing heads & better balanced cam.

We mentioned that the gas mileage wasn't great, after we got it back. He replied "that wasn't among the parameters you gave me".

Well, he was right, it wasn't. But the Ghia is a blast to drive, so no harm there.

My super beetle ...34pict3 and Pertronix SVDA got 31 mpg last week on a 200 mile trip, mostly highway, going 65-70 mph

Hey guys. I was gonna start a new thread for MPG RECORDS, but then I found this thread, so...

Just drove 300 miles down I-5 with the following:
1968 standard
1600 SP
H30/31

36 MPG - I did a little dance at the pump

I installed megasquirt fuel/spark on my type 4 powered bus and am happy to report 21mpg highway 15city (I drive my bus hard in the city). A proper tune goes a long way toward good fuel mileage.

Cusser Thu Apr 05, 2018 7:28 pm

That's an interesting question, as I haven't checked my VW mileage in decades.

I got my 1970 in 1972, and got about 22mpg with the stock 1600cc SP engine.

I got my 1971 Super Convertible in 1976, and got about 28-30mpg with the stock 1600cc DP engine, even though the Super is heaver. Go figure; maybe it just happened to have better balancing from factory.

After I install the new transmission into my 1970, I'll try to get some mileage information on its 1971 1600cc DP engine with 30/31 carb if I can do that without Mrs. Cusser sneaking it out to drag the horse pasture.

Used to get 18 mpg on average with a stock '69 1600 SP Bus, a best ever of 34 mpg in my '71 stock DP 1600 Super Beetle. My sister's '71 Type 3 would do 40 mpg. This is all on Imperial gallons.

TDCTDI Fri Apr 06, 2018 12:48 am

1968 Deluxe Bus, 1500cc, maybe 1600cc single port out of a 1970 Beetle, with 28 PICT carb & SVDA distributor with Pertronix ignition getting 25.6MPG in mixed city/open road keeping around 50MPH.

Using 10% Ethanol;
1964 113 U.S. Deluxe, 1200cc 40hp, 4.375 to 1 R&P = 30 MPG
1965 111 1200 "A" Standard, 1200cc 36hp, 4.43 to 1 R&P = 38MPG

Using Ethanol free;

1964 113 = 34 MPG
1965 111 = 42MPG

All my cars; 62 421 Pontiac Catalina, 63 389 Pontiac Catalina, 64VW 113, 65VW 111, 69 H-O 455 Pontiac LeMans, 76 Olds Omega Brougham, 99 V6 Ford Ranger, 2001 Nissan V6 Xterra, 2012 Nissan SL Sentra. All of these cars suffer a 4MPG and horsepower loss using 10% Ethanol. Think about how much fuel the country is wasting because of this. Think about your tax federal dollars going to the government to pay for these corn subsidies.

60ragtop Fri Apr 06, 2018 9:42 am

33 in my 60 no matter how I drove it. In our 70 I get 30 my wife gets 27, must be the racer in her
