In my rewiring project (67 Fastback) I now have everything working except the emergency flashers and the indicator lights for the turn signals. The turn signals themselves are working just fine.
For my guide I have been using this diagram for the car:
http://www.hallvw.clara.net/wire67us.htm
and Matt Roberds page for the 9-pin:
http://www.type2.com/library/electris/vw-9prong.html
I have two relay boxes, both have the 54 and 54f terminals not shown in the diagram for the car. I have not connected them to anything.
So, one 9-pin came from my 68. In that car the emergency flashers didn't work and the dash indicators would usually give a single blink and then nothing.
The 9-pin that came with the 67 gives no dash indicator flash when the turn signals are running and when I wired up -S and 49a to the emergency flasher switch (as shown in the diagram), the fuse blew as soon as the switch closed.
So, I am looking for a known good 9-pin 12v relay. I'm hoping that will resolve the indicator light issue. Because one of the relays gives a flash I'm hoping I have that part of the wiring right.
The emergency flasher issue seems like some mistake I've made. The car diagram shows the switch wired to S and 49a. Matt Roberds page shows a "-S" instead of "S". I hope these are the same terminal.
Ideas?

Have you considered this one? I used it on my 66 Bug, which was 12 volt when I got it:

There are multiple ways to get around using the 9 pin relay if that's a route you want to explore:
An explanation of how it works/is wired: http://flowcon.us/td/9pinRelay/
I'm going to be using a version of the DPDT relay when I add 4 way flashers to my 64 in the near future. Simpler to wire, cheaper to replace and easier to find locally.

Since I'm so close I think I'm going to keep the 9-pin on this car. I just placed an order for the 9-pin from ww.
Great link to the other samba thread ataraxia. The Matt Roberds page also shows a way to build an equivalent system from easily available components.
I couldn't get the flowcon link to open.
Thanks guys.

The website is 'only available during normal business hours' - only found this after going back to the home page. I saved the 9 pin flasher information to a .pdf and can email it to you if you want it for reference. It's similar to Matt Roberds page. |

All grounds - check
All bulbs - check
All wiring and fuses - check
Blinker / column - check
Everything checked, I have a 9 pin 12v flasher. All wired correctly. Using alligator clips I removed the VL wire from the flasher and wired it directly to the 30 red terminal and both blinkers lights front and back lit up..same for VR. Then i removed the wire from 49a. And did the same, and using my blinker switch all light lit up when I moved switch to either left or right.
With all that, said. Is it a,bad flasher? I put hasee the car with the blinker not working and pre ious owner said he did the conversation but could not get blinkers to work. I did find that he uses single filament bulbs up front where there was suppose to be dual filament |
