I just bought my 74 SB this past week and I stopped for my first fuel fill up today. I had one hell of a time filling it up. Fuel kept backing up into the filler neck, tripping the auto shut off. I tried various positions of the nozzle with no success. The only way I could get fuel to flow at a decent yet slow rate was to practically fill it from the tip of the neck. I was getting the typical fuel smell in the cab of the car this weekend which leads me to think that my fuel system needs to be gone through. The evaporator can at the rear of the car has been removed by the PO. I'm wondering if there is a clock in a vent line preventing fuel to flow effectively into the filler neck.
I plan on checking and most likely replacing all the rubber lines in the vent system as well as the rubber filler neck sections. Has anyone else had issues like this? |

I agree that it sounds like your vent is clogged. You will have to examine how your vents are configured. It is fairly common for previous owners to close off the vents thinking that is where the fuel smell is coming from, or thinking it’s not needed. If you search the forums here you’ll find some schematics showing how it should be plumbed. Test all of your hard lines because they can be clogged too. |

Maybe look and see if the top of the fuel tank is sucked in from a plugged vent hose. You will have to remove the liner on top of the fuel tank. |

Rain forecasted for most of the week here in the Midwest. I plan on going through everything around the tank. I may even change the sending unit gasket for good measure. Rubber hoses and gaskets are not that expensive and would save me a literal headache from the fumes. |
