PV/T=PV/T I seem to remember!

Currently I am "reusing" the old doughnuts as they are rusted solid to the heat exchangers. Swore, jammed the clamps down on them catching the exhaust lip and so far so good. Driven it about 300 miles since - No backfiring, no noise even though I can't believe it is sealing properly. But not an ideal solution. Mainly as I have not addressed the rust on the heat exchanger nipples.

Dont have the cash for welding. Think I am going to experiment with silicone tape - doesn't seem that I will do any damage.

Cheers for the advice gents.

OE (original equipment) clamps have VW stamped in them.
NOS 211 298 055 EXHAUST CLAMP KIT T2

Anyone have a Nos set they could post some pix of?

Thank you

Here's a NOS set, but no VW logo.

Anyone used these?

V Band Exhaust Clamp
Wonder what size clamp it would take. The seal is 35mm (1-3/8") I.D.
Don't know what the O.D. is?

Thank you

I used a 1.75" kit on my BN4 heater because the asbestos donut was ruined.. I welded on a pair of circular flanges to go with it though.

You can buy a 4 in to 1 collector with V-band flange on the output side, for quick R&R of the muff muff... I haven't seen anyone use the v band clamp on the heater box connection yet though. I have an incoming Beetle project with a 40HP that I may try to find a pair of clamps for.

The doughnut between the cat and muffler fits the cat fine, but the ID is bigger than the 1.75" muffler pipe. Its been on the bus and sealed fine for several years. This spring howver it worked loose.. Resulting leak noisy as hell.

After not being able to locally source a replacement, I took it apart, cleaned up the doughnut on a bench grinder wire wheel, chucked it in the vise, and cut across the doughnut at an angle with a cut off wheel.

After loosening the muffler band clamp, slid the doughnut back on and stuffed the muffler into the cat as far as it would go (and allow wrench space to the band boltrs). With the clamp joint at top and bottom of exhaust, the cut was at the horizontal so it would be covered by the clamp. Tightened the clamp taking turns on the bolts the draw it together gradually, and made sure the muffler band clamp was tightened as well.

Test drive, back to the usual sounds.
