Very strange. It will start right up always except if I start it and it dies. It's like it floods but I realize that's not possible with there being no carb. After it sits for a few hours it will start back?? Any thoughts?

You need to start withe the basics when it wont start. Narrow it down to Fuel, Spark, or Air then Re-post with your findings.

Hall sensor.

When it shuts down, check for no spark.

there is no hall sensor on air cooled vanagon. Is this a Federal or California van? L-jetronic? Sounds like a bad/sticky double relay.

to test, after it starts, and dies, leave the ignition key on. measure voltage @ coil. should be ~12v.

If no power at coil, it's ignition switch; stop. replace/fix.

If yes, pop open AFM, and move the wiper Counter Clock Wise to connect Fuel Pump switch (that energizes right side relay).

If you don't hear the fuel pump come on on, it's probably the double relay.

Double relays are expensive $80. You can make your own for under $10.

Test before replacing.

Vanagon L. New ignition switch and new AFM. Ran both tests and the fuel pump will come on. If I let it sit long enough sometimes it will fire. Currently still nothing. Could it possibly be then condenser? When you crank the engine I can smell fuel also. Thanks for the help. The van has been running post replacing the AFM, distributor cap, plugs, wires and the ignition switch.

I had driven it 40 miles the day before. I started it up to back it into the driveway to change breaks and it died. Here we are now

You really need to start with the basics on a problem like this. It will point you in the right direction to start the proper Diag. After it stalls out, and wont re-start.
1. Do you have Spark on all 4 Plugs?

2. Do you have Fuel
- Fuel pressure while pushing on AFM flap
- Fuel pressure while cranking
- Are the injectors firing?

3. Compression # on all 4 cyl.

Check and report findings, people cant help unless you start the with basics. It could be 1000 Different things. This should help narrow it down.

It's your temp sender two. or cylinder head temp sender.

they loose resistance over time, so they have to be changed out from time to time. Overlooked allot on an aircooled.
It tells the fuel injection how hot the engine is, it won't start hot because the fuel injection is giving it a mixture for a cold engine.
It's got a thin wire that gets cut and overlooked all the time.
