SamboSamba22,

I have indeed converted my '77 back to FI.

I don't really have a lot to add to what others have said except be patient and test everything. Installing a bad component can be very frustrating and somewhat difficult to diagnose after putting the entire system together. Buy the best (original) parts you can afford and buy new what makes sense (new FI harness, BEEGEE hoses, etc.). I purchased three semi-whole FI systems off the samba so I could select the best parts. This means I now have a pile of spare parts to do something with (there is a hint there).

The most difficult parts to get were actually some of the tins.

I got loads of help, assistance, and advice from the Samba, Ratwell, Amskeptic, Asiab3, and KentPS - as he did his before me. It is really beneficial to have another bus to look at for reference if you have access to one.

Again, take your time, research, test, clean, be careful and methodical and you will be fine.

Frankly, if I can make this swap and have it turn out as well as it has - you certainly can. I did not go out of my way to document the swap, but some of it is referenced in my lazy build thread "My new Bus Murphy".

Good luck - Andrew

Here’s a link to the fuel injection repair manual.

Thank you for the message Andrew.
Oscars napkin, thank you for some insight and clarification. I’m in the early stages of this but will be picking up a rebuilt 2L for these components this coming week.

With respect to the fuel pump, I have heard the pumps are sensitive to crud,
One person was suggesting not to put a fuel filter before the pump, but to have a filter strainer such as

https://www.amazon.com/Hastings-Filters-FF1125-Screen-Strainer/dp/B001BJTG1S

Any opinions on this?

The fuel pump contains highly polished close tolerance surfaces, anything that makes it through that strainer (tiny grit or iron oxide) will damage the guts and diminish performance, a high capacity filter like VW used is much better for the pump.

Yes, sorry, was thinking for a moment that the filter is after the pump, not before. In that moment of thought I was thinking a full filter would decrease fuel flow to the pump

Here is the believed to be complete GE coded type 4 engine with all the original Fuel Injection items:

Before removal of components:

Here are the items removed from the engine case, a light degrease, and laid out as they function on the engine:

Anything jumping out to anyone as missing?

From my puny phone screen, the CSV and TTS appear to be missing. Also check for a decel valve, TS2, and ECU. I’ll check again later. :)

Good man Robbie. Even IF you're still rocking your flip phone.

Flips are for flopping, not phones. 8)

The FI barrel nut on the throttle cable is flanged, unlike the common ones that are sold for carbs and heater cables. (Looks like yours is missing too.)

What engine is this going on? A factory FI engine should be good to go, but with a factory carbureted engine, you’ll need a few upper case bolts swapped out so they’re long enough to hold the plenum and TTS. The carbureted firewall tin also needs drilling to take the throttle cable, left fuel line, and FPR.

Also, make sure the EGR blockoff is airtight, and sell the EGR stuff to a Californian bus owner.

Missing CSV on original engine pic for sure.

As you clean up parts I recommend reinforcing the wiring at the Series resistor

Also you undertake a harness refresh...

I did this modification a few months ago. It was simple to do, and I feel it was time very well spent. Highly recommend it to anyone interested in ensuring longevity with their bus/van.

As for the FI harness build.... well, I wimped out and went with a new one from Kyle. It looks great and has been problem free for a couple years. Kyle does good work.
