Beetles were available (after 1968 or so) with two transmission options. The standard equipment was a 4-speed manual transmission.
The option was a semi-automatic transmission called the Automatic Stick Shift.
Automatic Stick Shift was kind of a hybrid system. Internally it was like a manual transmission but it had a torque converter like an automatic and it had an automatic clutch.
You still had to shift by moving the shift lever but there was no clutch pedal - the clutch would automatically be activated when you touched the shift lever.
It was not entirely uncommon for those cars to be converted to manual transmission. |

It depends on how original you want the car back to being.
my 69 autostick has been in my family since my dad bought it brand new. It's too sentimental to me to ever even think about having it converted. And personally I believe most folks who did this conversion did it due to word of mouth about autosticks "not being reliable," "too hard to find parts," etc-- NONE of which is true. Even the samba has led to a lot of misconceptions about the autostick (and I have done my best to right the ship in that regard.) It's really a shame IMO.
But in your case, being a 3rd owner, and considering the other issues that need to be addressed on yours, it's probably better to leave it as is. And it's no big deal to the value of the car- in fact it may be worth more with the 4 speed, again due to complete falsehoods about the autostick.
If it wouldn't cost so much to ship, I'd ask you to hook me up with the PO and take that autsotick tranny off his hands! :D
Oh and welcome to the samba |

Does the previous owner also still have the original foot pedals, stick shift, oil tank and vacuum tank? |
