View original topic: Is it legal??!! Pistol grip shotgun shifter

I'm thinking about making a pistol grip shotgun as my shifter in my beetle. I'm in South Carolina. Does anyone know the restrictions or if it is legal or not?

Smart thing would be to ask your local sheriffs office or police office, just to be sure. Might present an issue if you get pulled over after dark. Would look like a weapon standing there at the ready. Might want to avoid the whole getting shot potential and use an old beer tap.

Great idea--------- but then he will get arrested for having an open container.

Sometimes legal doesn't make it a good idea.
I think more important would be a trooper thinking it's a shot gun and neutralizing you for putting the car in neutral.

Yeah. I've seen some in some old rat rods and always thought it would be cool in my rat. The way things are these days you don't want to give an officer an reason to be jumpy. I respect them all and salute their bravery for what they do every day. Just wondering. I'll check with one of the officers around town.

Whatever you decide to use for your shifter lever . . . be sure that is heavy enough so that it will pop your transaxle out of gear every time you hit a bump in the road!!! :P

Since SC is not an open carry state, I'd suggest moving to NC. We are open carry. :)

Having anything that looks like a weapon, is a sure way to have it mistaken as the real things.

Just remember that police officers want to go home at the end of their shift more than ASSume you have a 'cool shifter".

put a red tip on the end

Consider this, back in the early 70s Dodge,Chrysler,Plymouth models came factory equipped with pistol grip shifters. I cannot recall any news stories about law enforcement or anyone else for that matter wetting themselves because of design of shifter, can you?

Those were obviously cool shifters. Would the PO's "pistol grip shotgun" shifter be equally identifiable as a cool car part rather than a gun?

You need more than one gun to do it right.

Back in the day, we didn't have so many police deaths per year. Cops have a right to be afraid. Anything that looks like a gun is silly to have anywhere in the car that's within arm's reach.

This thread is a little silly.. it all depends on your state... does your state allow open or conceal carry?? If so, your probably ok since it would be legal to have a real, loaded firearm .. if you live in California or other gun-fearing states, just dont...
If you lived here in Arizona you would not even be asking this question.
