View original topic: 12v generator for 36hp
64restore Thu Mar 02, 2017 6:40 pm

Hello every one. My name is chris. I am currently rebuilding my 36hp engine. The previous owner had converted everything to 12v, but as I was completing the engine tin installment I realized that the 12v generator did not fit correctly. I looked through a few threads only to find the smaller generators are getting hard to find, a few numbers that confused me jumping back and forth and a headache. Can anyone give me the info I need? I'd like a 12v generator for an all stock 36hp engine for my 1960 bug. Thanks, chris

Yep here's what you want and they are still out there. They fit like a glove you can mount regulator like a 6 volt or on or near the fan shroud.

I see your generator mount tin is different than mine. Will I have to change that also?

I think we are looking at 40 hp but 36 would work too

The other option is to have your 6v generator rewound to be a 12v. The 90mm - Porsche 912 generators are available, but they can be expensive.

64restore I'm confused, Can you unbolt your generator stand? IF you can you don't have a 36hp engine you have a 40hp or later. 36hp engines had the generator stands cast into the engine case. IF you do have a 36hp engine look for a small diameter 12V industrial generator. They are WAY cheaper than the Porsche units and put out 38amps instead of 25amps.

Either have info on who does this rewinding from 6v to 12v, or a Bosch # for the 90mm industrial generator?

It appears they are still going. Are you speaking of them from experience, or a google search?

I lived up there. They did work for me 30 years ago. They have been around for a while. If anyone can do it they probably can.n

I'll check on it, but a lot has changed in 30 years. Not too many shops left that do anything but replace. All the China bashers keep saying to get your original Bosch alternator rebuilt. Against the suggestion of the shop I now work at, we had a 1 wire alternator rebuilt. After finding out only 1 of 4 shops we regularly used would rebuild it, I was handed a $325 invoice when I went to pick it up. This was about 3 years ago when the NEW Bosch alternators hadn't quite reached $300, and the Chinese ones were just over a $100. Zundfolge1432 posted some excellent info, but it's frustrating when replys are blanket/general statements without any other useful info to move forward.

RickC on here does it. His units are beautiful and he is great to work with. He also has units ready to go and it includes a regulator adjusted to match

Thanks for the info. It looks like the higher amp 90mm versions are longer like the two different 105mm versions, so you need the proper recessed backing plates as well. Here's a link to RickC's classifieds if anyone else is interested.

I think I have a guy down here that can do it. he has had a shop for the 20 years I've been here. I think I asked him, it has been a while.

Hey guys. I actually lucked out and found a Porsche 6v generator a couple days ago. Guy in Texas said he's had it for ever and he was never going to use it so I could have it. Excellent shape. Getting it rewound for 130 bucks. Thanks guys for the help! And yes it is a 36hp just finished rebuilding it. Started it up today. Sounds great! Tweet tweet. It's the original engine. Only reason I'm leaving it all original. Hard to find them.

Nice work!!!!! Looks great!

Looks very nice. If you are going all stock you could go back to 6 volt and make some money seilling that Porsche 90 mm 12 volt generator. About all these old cars have is some ligbt bulbs and a wiper motor. An original '58-'64 wiper should be easy to find. I'm running Bosch H4 headlights on my 6v Bug for improved lighting. If you want 12v that's cool, but I wouldn't let a prior conversion choose your path.
