i have a street legal buggy, im looking for insurance, foremost says they will not insure it if it for the street, what insurance companies insure them for street use. 63 full size pan, all working, lights, windshield and wipers, blinkers etc.

Theres hundreds of companies out there, where do you live? Call up for quotes, were not your mom man. If you want help, then give us more info...

Hmmm. Foremost insured my street legal buggy for the street. They also insured the PO the same way. You may want to call back and double check, you may have been misinformed. It might also be a difference between Texas and Georgia.

i tried foremost twice it may be georgia but i dont see why, i actually found some other company on foremost's web site who will insure a street rod but not a VW dune buggy because it is too open. check that insurance card and make sure it is for street use. Foremost will insure my buggy but NOT for street use.

Grange has insured all the street sandrails I have had in the past. No problems, inexpensive too.

thanks im looking into grange now, but they don't sound to optimistic, should i not be reffering to it as a dune buggy.

My '68 Manx is registered as a Beetle convertible, and it is insured the same way. Until I make a few improvements & get it appraised, I'll keep it just like that. I'm pretty sure I'm way underinsured(it's unrestored, cherry, and irreplaceable IMO), but getting the car out & enjoying it was my main goal when I bought it. I'm insured with Liberty Mutual Insurance Co., and the Manx shares a policy with my '91 Jetta and my wife's '02 Jetta. My wife works for Liberty, so she was able to eek out any discounts I was entitled to, like 'multiple vehicle' and 'limited use' discounts. If you rack up less than 7500 miles per year, your car could qualify; I put only about 3000 on it yearly, due to the limited length of summer here in the northeast.

Insuring a manx style buggy or a sandrail as a regular Volkswagen works until you need the coverage. The insurance company claims adjuster will look at the vehicle and say "This is not a VW, we insured a VW not a buggy" Claim denied.
You will be stuck with the bill then. Do it right and tell them exactly what you have.

i got a quote for $1277 for 6 months, with the car valued at $5000 that seems pretty high to me, does anyone have dune buggy insurance for cheaper than that. and with what company?

That was with Grange? Damn, I paid about $90 a half for the sandrail I used to have. They would not write comprehensive or collision on it though. This was a liability only policy.
Did your age and your driving record maybe affect this?

$90 a half? what exaclty does "a half" refer to?

63buggy Tue Apr 06, 2004 2:03 pm

the quote was before they looked at my driving record. I may just do the liabilty for $551 for six months. i just want to drive the car already. but i feel that is still expensive, and if i crash i lose. i dont like that idea.
