I think I have read that the purpose of the insulation on the gas models was to limit the temperature rise inside the tank, so as not to overwhelm the evap control system (charcoal cannister). As Alika said, not an issue with diesel.
In this case the heat source is the transmission, which of course the tank is sitting on. And for Canadian Syncros, this eventually means literally sitting on the transmission, once the steel tank straps rust away.
Then the combination of the heat and the trapped dirt, salt, water and the metal on the insulation rots a big hole in your expensive Syncro transaxle.

Haha yes it is. I could show you more but you get the idea and I don't want to pollute this thread. So I will just add a couple that are transaxle / fuel tank insulation damage related...
