I'd love to hear stories and see pictures of your Beetle paint restorations. Did you go for a factory color, or something unique?

What makes a good paint job, and what makes a bad paint job? Maaco has a pretty notorious reputation for their cheap paint work, but is their new platinum option any good?

Just hoping to get a thread on repainting these going, love to see the see cars shine again!

"Who painted your Beetle?"

1971 Convertible: Maaco in 1978, for $139 (had been Clementine Orange).
1970 sedan: VW factory in Germany

My friend Charlie painted mine. It's the correct factory color L31A.

This might be a better question to post in the body and paint forum.

That said, I had a neighbor and his body shop owner friend repaint my 69 royal red. It's a tad darker than i remembered the original paint being but I like it. I paid $3000, way too much to spend on this car looking back on it. They also did some minor body repair though.

My Father painted mine including the body work.......and the dreaded shaved drip rails. No factory color here. Custom mix for the main body color as well as the flames by my Father as well.

Painted my own car by taking classes at local vo tech. Did 100% of the work and now I know why paint and body costs so much, also why a lot of painters are drunks. Just kidding :D

First time painter painting my '64 bug. Original color is L87 Pearl White. But I can't get a VW birth certificate (because it was CKD, Complete Knock Down, meaning it was assembled in a Belgium plant) so I decided to paint it Tropical Turquoise using the Matrix system.

Here it is in epoxy

I painted it and had some trash/craters in the clear. This was due to paint flaking off from the GUN itself! Cheap Chinese crap  I sanded it off and ready to respray using a nickel plated gun.

I painted my own a very similar color to "csndyflame73". All I can say is I wish I would have gone with a solid color (no pearl or metalflake). After looking a lot bugs just don't look right to me unless they are a solid color. Doesn't have to be a factory color though.

Garage paint job. Concur, it is a lot of work and more expensive than most would think.

For sure! I'm painting a 61 GMC truck in a PPG pearl tri stage white and the color pearl and clear came to just over $4200. And that's a discount for a shop.
Also I have a 2015 Ram 2500 and I was curious so I called and PPG color for that retails at $1930 a gallon for JUST the color. Damn!
