I have been collecting and researching spare tire tool kits for a while now. I have seen information in various places on the web, and mostly on this website. There is plenty of information spread through the Hazet tools with photos and numbers topic which is a sticky topic in this forum.

I would like to get all the possible information and knowledge about these kits in one place.
I would like to go through each style, version and variation of the various kits.
The style is the main layout.
The version is evolution of the particular style
The variations are the changes of the tools, etc. within each style.
What I have seen so far is that there are six styles:
V1 standard layout
V2 fabric tool roll
V3 "brake" kit
V4 1500 kit
V5 late style kit
V6 rectangular box
The standard layout is the most common. I have identified 6 versions of this box. Each can be identified by number, style and locations of the clips that are rivitted to the box.
V1.1 full circle, 11 tools
V1.2 full circle, 12 tools
V1.3 semi circle, 12 tools
V1.4 13 tools
V1.5 4 wrenches, no T socket wrench
V1.6 extendable spark plug wrench, separate tommy bar for spark plug wrench.
Through time the tools, etc. changed. These are the variations of the particular version.
for instance perhaps:
V1.3.1 had a 36 wrench and felt backing.
V1.3.2 had a 36x21 wrench with a decal still showing the earlier wrench.
V1.3.3 had a 36x21, earlier decal and flocking instead of felt.
V1.3.4 had flocking and a decal with the 36x21 wrench shown.
I am not sure of that exact progression, but with enough input and data points we should be able to nail this down.

I want to include everything that is known about these kits. here are some simple facts which I believe to be true:
The kits with VW stamped on them were sold through VW dealers
The kits with Hazet tourist stamped on them were sold through the aftermarket, or could have been sold through dealers.
Both style lids were produced concurrently through the production run.
VW box:
Hazet Tourist box:
The decal in the lid may not match the tools inside the kit.
early kits have felt under the tools.
later kits have flocking on the tool side of the inside of the kit.
some kits have neither felt or flocking
VW specific specialty tools have numbers starting with 5xx. i.e. 527, 561, etc.
sometime in the mid '50s (1957ish) the numbering changed to 25xx. i.e. 2527, 2561, etc.
The tools that don't start with 5xx or 25xx are standard hazet tools.
In 1965 the Hazet name went to HAZET with an upper case A.
There are transitional tools that have both upper case "A" and lower case "a" on the same tool.
I am not sure that everything I am putting here is exactly correct, so any corrections are welcomed. |
