TheSamba.com :: View topic - FAKE texts pretending to be from Everett Barnes/TheSamba.com

We received several reports that a scammer claiming to be Everett Barnes from TheSamba.com was texting users directly.
The texts are from 330-356-7160 or other numbers and ask for your username and password.

THESE ARE FAKE

If you responded with your password already to one of these texts, please email Everett directly at [email protected] and report it. Your account may have been compromised.

If you lost control of your account here and use the same password elsewhere, like for your email or bank, you need to change those passwords immediately or the scammer may take over those accounts too.

You might consider putting a recaptcha on the classified pages so that they can not be used to pull user information. The simplest one I have seen is the google https://www.google.com/recaptcha/intro/

Craigslist uses this one before revealing contact information. I had some issues with my site and put it on there and have had no more problems since.

Yes, I am considering "hiding" the phone #s.

Thank you for the recaptcha info and link, this is one option I was thinking about.

Unfortunately it's scammers manually grabbing the numbers, it's not automated.

This is the guy trying to sell me a split beetle (The Ice House Split Beetle). Do not deal at all with him. He used the Ohio 330 phone number Everett had listed.

Thanks for posting that sample, they texted a bunch of people today.
I got several emails about it and at least one person lost control of their ad for a short period of time.

As you said - my phone # is from Arizona.
I don't bulk text people or even text members at all, that would be useless. Only a small percentage of people on the site use their phone #.
Also I know how to write English properly. :D

330-944-1582 texted me last night, same password seeker as above, wanted me to give my email password to match the Samba site. I replied with my name @knoxcountysheriff.org password thinblueline22135, he hasn't replied ;)

Yes, they want to take control of older accounts so they can post fake ads.

It's harder to notice when an ad is a scam if it's from a user that's been here for many years.
