Is there a trick to installing a stock speaker and bracket into the dash of my '65 split? The windshield wiper mechanism (stock) is in the way. I tried several different ways to push it up there with no success. I checked older posts and found someone asking the same question but no answer. Are there different types of speaker mounting brackets? The radio and ash tray are out.

It screws in from underneath off to the right of the radio and is not close to the wiper motor.
A couple pics of the bracket and it mounted in my '61:

A '65 has the larger wiper motor and assembly though, right?
My '61 might be much easier.
Maybe someone can post a pic of that or explain if it doesn't easily slip up in there.

I think you are right, the '65 has a larger wiper motor assembly (brackets and arms). I hope someone else has experienced this also and has a cure.

I put mine in my 65 without issue. If I remember correctly, one of the upper corners wasn't squared off, it was angled. Been a long time. I can take pics tomorrow if need be.

I had to pull out the wiper motor in our 66 to get the bracket in.

I pulled the arms off
Removed the skinny nuts from the wiper shafts
pulled the shafts back through the grommets
Slid the motor off to the left.

It's a hassle but it also helps to loosen the package try down on the right side.

I put the speaker bracket in our '67 by dropping the tray. I did not have to remove the wiper motto or arms.

I may have dropped the tray in my '61 above too - I can't recall now.

BTW, I did use those shitty blue wiring connectors, they were already on there.

Got the speaker and mount in!
Lowered the tray and kept twisting the speaker bracket until the right spot was found. I was just about to remove the wiper arm which would have been a pain to put back on. The bottom line is it's in and works. THANKS TO ALL for assistance. :lol:

Did you have the speaker mounted on bracket as well? I'm having a difficult time getting the bracket into my '67. Same issues, just doesn't appear to be enough room?

I have the WW repop.

EDIT: after taking radio out and loosening the wiper arm on pass side I managed to slide it in from where the radio would be then across to where it sits... As soon as I added the giant WW speaker I could no longer get the speaker and mount in. Even with the radio, ashtray and wiper motor out.

Finally figured it out.

I split the two parts (the speaker mount and giant speaker) and slid them in separately. Since the screws you get with the WW kit are tiny and impossible to get threaded from behind the dash I drilled out the speaker mount holes slightly larger. Then I found some small bolts, nuts and washers.

Once everything was behind the dash I slid the two parts over to the radio opening and inserted the nuts and bolts. Tightened everything down, slid it back into place and screwed in the speaker mount into the lower dash lip.

I'm working on a January 1967 deluxe. I've mounted radios in a couple of other 60's buses and both had the two holes to mount the speaker bracket.

This 1967 does not have any holes. It has a single hole near where the two smaller holes should be that looks remarkably like the hole used to mount the dome light switch on the speedometer pod. Actually there is another of these "dome light shaped" holes on the lip below the wiper switch as well.

before I go drilling holes in the lip of my dash to mount the speaker bracket I thought I'd ask if any other 1967 owners have the proper mounting holes in the lip of their dashes.

This has the bigger radio opening too so It also makes me wonder if there is something special about the radio size and speaker placement I need to consider.

On my June 19th '67 Westy it has both those holes.

The left one is for the defrost option and the right one is for the fader.

If you have the deluxe cone speaker it has two rubber bumpers on the bottom that rest on the shelf and the top screw holds it.

Hmmm. I'm using the Wolfsburg West bracket and speaker. I could put small bumper in the two offset bottom holes but there is no provision for a screw at the top that I can see. There's just a flat flange that rests against the underside of the top of the dash.

Any suggestions on how to mount this speaker are welcome

Just did mine this week, but with the original stock speaker bracket. Put a screw upwards on each end of the bracket that rests on the shelf above the tray. Then glued small flat magnets (2mm) to the top portion of the speaker bracket to adhere to the underside of the dash. Seems to be solid as a rock.

Nancy, my Jan of 1967 Camper had the two small holes as seen in previous photos above for attaching the bottom edge of the stock speaker bracket from the factory. The bracket with an attached stock-ish speaker fit up in there and attached with the original screws fairly easily. By the way, while the radio and speaker is out is a great time to glue in a dense cloth speaker cloth behind the grill surface and then install the radio and speaker, now well hidden... https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1768451

This is the High Fidelity Long-Travel-Cone Heavy Magnet Speaker and Bracket with Mounting Screw.

I added the thicker nylon washer. Original from Westfalia was a whitish thin fiber washer. Also the original dash screw was cadmium plated Pan Slot.

Was this offered by Westfalia? Any documentation or other examples? I had the same setup in my 67 SO42 but assumed it was just some PO hack that didn't care about drilling a hole in his dash. The speaker in mine was long gone (replaced by a Kraco) but the bracket remained.
