I do have a jet gauge set so I'll check them out tomorrow or Saturday along with float level etc.

I'll report back.

Thanks again guys.

I have solved several running problems on new carbs for my customers by simply taking apart the new carb, and giving it a good cleaning, and installing a quality gasket kit.

Seems the manufacturing process is starting to let the "cleaning" phase slip a bit.

What part number is stamped on the carb and on the distributor? Volkswagen made many different types for different applications and if you don't have a pair that were made to work together then it will never operate to it's true potential. If these are after market components I personally would just go to Tim at Volksbitz for a new, model/year appropriate carb and another forum member for a rebuilt correct distributor.

If they do match then ensure you really are idling on the idle circuit of the carb. Check the 'fast idle screw' is only just touching the stop.

Here's where the float is sitting. Hopefully you can see the fuel level too.

Adjusted the accel pump back to give less of a shot and that helped quite a bit. Still seems to be loading up while idleing. It has a good smooth idle. But if left to sit and idle for 30 seconds the idles start to drop and gets a tiny bit rough. It can be cleared out easier now with less of a shot from the pump though.

I think the next step is to check the fuel pump PSI then. , It only needs Like 1.5 . To much pressure ,gas can blow past the float regardless of it setting . Adding a gasket or two under the pump will lower the pressure, if indeed it is to high .

10-4. I'll check that first chance I get next week.

Thanks for al the help everybody.

If overfilling can be ruled out, the problem can be narrowed down to the jetting and the mixture/accl. pump settings (with all other mechanical adjustments dialed in). Similar engines can respond differently to jetting changes, so it's mostly trial & error to get everything nailed down for you particular setup & location. Using an Exhaust Gas Analyzer would take some of the guesswork out of it.

How would you accurately do this with a stock exhaust? What location would you suggest for a bung or for a tailpipe sniffer?

No need to weld in a bung, just stick a probe in the tail pipes. Check both and average the readings. Should be similar...exhaust gasses mix in the muffler before they find their way out.

Have you done this? I can't imagine how sensor and clamp would fit in a stock peashooter and even if it did I don't think I'd trust the readings. I have read a lot of similar discussion on this forum it seems that the stock exhaust is not a good host for an accurate 02 sensor. And if it's not accurate - what's the point?

There's a thread in here somewhere that showed a good location to weld a bung into the stock muffler, whether a bug or bus style. The location of the bung picked up the exhaust coming in from all 4 cylinders at that location. I think there was a picture of it as well.

It may have been in the long AFM thread..
